LC's Denver Clinton makes game-winning basket for homecoming victory

Going to the final second, Lynchburg-Clay’s Denver Clinton gave the Mustangs a reason to celebrate on homecoming, as he sank a game-winning basket as time expired for a 47-46 victory over Peebles.

Clinton was thrown the pass off an inbounds play, and he raced to the hoop, drove through Peebles defenders and released the shot that swished through the hoop for the victory as the student section stormed the court in excitement.

After the first quarter came to a close, it was Peebles holding an 8-5 lead, and it was the visiting Indians outscoring the Mustangs 19-10 in the second quarter for a 27-15 score at halftime.

The Mustangs had a big third frame, putting up 17 points on the board while holding Peebles to five points for a 32-32 tied score.

Then came the fourth frame where the Mustards had the game-winner from Clinton, as they outscored Peebles, 15-14 in the final eight minutes for the one-point win.

Clinton led the Mustangs with 13 points, totaling five two-point baskets and he was 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.

Trevor Niehaus finished with 12 points with two two-point baskets, two 3-pointers and was 2-of-5 from the free-throw line. He also led LCHS with nine rebounds and was tied for the lead in assists with three.

Cody Bell finished with nine points, sinking one two-point basket, two 3-pointers and he was 1-of-2 in his free throw attempts. Bell also held the co-lead in assists with three and had the lead in steals for LCHS with four.

Elam Faust finished with five points as he sank a 3-pointer and two-point bucket.

Braedon West totaled four points with a two-pointer, and he went 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. Also with four points was Asher Faust, collecting two two-point baskets.

The Mustangs as a team finished with 11 two-pointers, five 3-pointers, and they were 8-of-13 from the free-throw line. LC also collected 34 rebounds, 11 assists and seven steals.

Peebles was led in scoring by Josh McClary with 15 points, making four two-pointers and he was 7-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Team totals for the Indians included 11 two pointers, three 3-pointers, and they were 15-of-23 from the free-throw line.

LC’s win improves them to 5-5 in the SHAC Division I standings, plus they are now 6-8 overall. Peebles moves to 4-4 in the SHAC Division I standings with a 5-8 overall mark.
