Fairfield sweeps Lynchburg-Clay in 3 sets

LEESBURG — Monday night saw the Fairfield Lady Lions have a rare feat of sorts, as they defeated the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs in three sets, winning each set by the exact same score.
Fairfield won over LCHS by scores of 25-15 in all three sets played at Grandle Gymnasium in Southern Hills Athletic Conference action.
Fairfield in the win was led in kills by Jobey Hattan with 18, and three players led the team in aces with two each as they were Hattan, Mackenzie Anderson and Alyssa Bales.
FHS had one block in the match from Jaeden Drury for the team lead, and the digs leaders were Remi Moon with 13 and Anderson with 12. Kelsey Clark had a team-best 33 assists in the win.
In the loss, Lynchburg-Clay was led in kills by Addy Carraher with six, and the lone ace by LCHS was off a serve by Melany Stephenson.
Mattie Magee led the Lady Mustangs with two blocks, and the digs leaders were Joslyn Rockey with 15, Avery Shope with 12 and Ava McLaughlin had 10. McLaughlin also led the Lady Mustangs with 10 assists.
As for set one, the score was tied early on twice, but after the Lady Lions broke the tied score at 2-2, they never trailed for the remainder of the first set.
FHS got their lead up to 11-6 at one point of the opening set with help from hits from Hattan and Moon.
Some of the early LCHS scoring came off hits and serves by Carraher and Magee.
Eventually, the Lady Lions built their lead to 17-10, and then to 19-10 off a Hattan hit which scored a point. Fairfield continued to add to their lead for the 25-15 set-one win.
Fairfield led from start to finish in set two, as they held a 9-2 lead when Lynchburg-Clay called a timeout. From there the Lady Lions continued to add to their advantage, as it was a 14-7 lead, and later a 18-10 score.
The Lady Lions scored seven of the final 12 points of the second set for the 25-15 win.
In set three, Fairfield and Lynchburg-Clay had a tied score four times, the last at 6-6. After that, the Lady Lions gained the lead off a hit by Anderson and then took a 10-7 lead with a point from McKinley Cox.
FHS added to their lead to take a 21-9 advantage and then continued until for the third time they held a final score of 25-15.
The loss moves LCHS to 8-2 in the SHAC Division I standings and 10-4 overall.
Fairfield improves to 9-4 overall and 8-1 in the SHAC Division II standings.
