Hillsboro hosted two Frontier Athletic Conference opponents this week, playing much-improved baseball against the Jackson Ironmen in a 2-0 loss, followed by a loss to the Washington Blue Lions on Thursday.
The Tuesday game (April 16) against the Jackson Ironmen at Hillsboro High School saw the Indians lose by just two runs, with JHS scoring both of their runs in the top of the fifth inning. For the game, the Indians totaled four hits and committed one error, while the Ironmen had three hits and no errors.
Hillsboro at the plate saw Brayden Hunter finish 2-for-3, while their other two hits were off the bat of Gavin Greer (1-for-2, one walk) and Ashton Clemons (1-for-2).
Brayden Oberrecht pitched all seven innings for Hillsboro, throwing seven innings, where he allowed two runs (none earned) on three hits and two walks. The Hillsboro starting pitcher finished with six strikeouts as he threw 113 pitches, 66 for strikes.
“We're playing team baseball. We're playing for each other, backing each other up, just having a lot of positivity, a lot of energy in the dugout,” HHS head coach Ben Miller said. “That's something we're stressing with these young guys is just to stay positive and work through — work through errors, work through anything that we need to work through, in order to stay positive and get back to work.
“We're playing some decent baseball right now. We still have to continue to work and get better in order to get our first W on the season.”
Coach Miller also spoke about Brayden Hunter’s two-hit game and more about the team.
“We're an extremely young team, and anytime we can get two hits against Jackson like that, it’s fantastic,” Miller said. “There's a lot of great effort, but the best effort was the team effort tonight. I mean, playing a team like Jackson, they're a really good baseball team.”
