HILLSBORO — Scoring 20 points in the first frame, it was evident the tempo was set by the home team Hillsboro Lady Indians on Wednesday evening.
They built on their lead for the ensuing three quarter, resulting in a 65-27 Frontier Athletic Conference win over the visiting Jackson Ironladies.
Hillsboro’s 38-point win over the rebuilding Ironladies — a program that won the previous three FAC championships — improved them to a 6-1 conference record and a 14-2 overall mark. The Ironladies are now 0-7 in the FAC and 0-15 overall.
The Lady Indians only trail their Highland County rival, McClain in the FAC standings, who are 7-0 in conference play and 15-1 overall.
On Wednesday, Hillsboro trailed by two points early on as Jackson was first to score points, but HHS didn’t trail for long with Kyra Boyd getting the Lady Indians on the board with a 3-pointer. Jackson made a free throw, tying the score with 6:23 left in the quarter.
From that point on the game belonged to the Lady Indians with a 3-pointer by Tylee Davis at the 5:40 mark of the first, as Hillsboro went on a 10-0 run.
The run included back-to-back steals and fastbreak layups by Boyd, and another 3-pointer made by Davis for a 13-3 HHS lead with 2:22 left in the opening frame.
Davis led the Lady Indians with 21 points, finishing the game with three two-point baskets, two 3-pointers and she was 9-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Jackson made it an eight-point scoring differential with a basket, but HHS came back with a layup from Kobie Miles, a 3-pointer by Dinah Ames, and two points from Boyd for a 20-5 Hillsboro lead.
Miles finished the game with five points, while Ames collected eight points in the win. Boyd totaled 13 points in the Lady Indians’ win.
The final basket of the quarter was a free throw by the visitors, putting Hillsboro’s lead at 14 points at the end of the first quarter.
Hillsboro led 37-15 when halftime arrived, outscoring Jackson 17-9 in the second quarter.
“We corrected a major problem that me and my staff watched on some film the last couple of weeks. I think tonight showed the progress of that,” HHS head coach Heather Storer said. “We played Blanchester earlier this week, and we saw similar progress. So, I would like to say that we're getting better this time of year, fixing small problems, and it's showing on game night. I’m super happy to see that.”
HHS opened the second quarter with a three-point play by Davis off a steal, layup and made free throw after being fouled. From there, Peighton Bledsoe — who totaled six points — connected with a two-point basket, and Davis followed with two made free throws, increasing Hillsboro’s lead to 27-6 with 6:03 left in the quarter.
Jackson came back with a 3-pointer, but Hillsboro’s Ames answered with a two-point basket. As the two teams exchanged a few baskets, it was Hillsboro leading 31-13 with 3:12 remaining in the second quarter.
From the 1:25 mark of the second to the 30.1 mark HHS scored four points with a basket by Davis and two free throws by Boyd for a 37-13 Lady Indians lead. Jackson scored the final points of the second, leaving Hillsboro’s halftime lead at 22 points.
Hillsboro won the third frame at 10-7 with the Lady Indians having points scored by Bledsoe, Miles, Davis, and Ames (who made a 3-pointer with 49 seconds left in the frame) for a 47-22 score after three quarters.
HHS scored 18 points in the fourth quarter, while Jackson scored five points.
Hillsboro’s fourth quarter scoring included baskets by Ella Jordan (who finished with eight points), Davis, Kayla Seeling, Bledsoe, and Piper Wilkin who scored off a steal and layup.
Next for Hillsboro is a FAC game on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Hillsboro High School with a start time of approximately 12:30 p.m.
In JV play, the Hillsboro Lady Indians defeated Jackson, 50-1. Leading HHS was Chanel Captain, Piper Wilkin and Taylor-Ann Scruggs each with nine points.
