Hillsboro Lady Indians win slugfest against McClain in two-day extra-inning game

Four hits from Hillsboro’s Addley Miller and a combined 16 hits from the Lady Indians as a team lifted them to a Frontier Athletic Conference victory over the host McClain Lady Tigers by a 13-11 score in a game that began on a Monday and ended on a Tuesday at Daryle Unger Field.
On Monday the game reached the bottom of the fifth inning until inclement weather arrived and pushed the remainder of the game to Tuesday (April 28) in Greenfield, and after the Frontier Athletic Conference game resumed it was Hillsboro winning the extra-inning game by two runs.
HHS now stands at 3-6 in the FAC and 4-14 overall. McClain’s FAC record is now 3-6 with an overall mark of 8-10.
The two Highland County rivals combined for 29 hits, eight errors, 24 runs, 22 RBI, six doubles, two home runs, 13 walks and 13 strikeouts in what was their first of two scheduled meetings this week.
Through the first three innings, it was Hillsboro leading 2-0 as they scored runs in the first and third innings, starting with Rilynn Swisshelm scoring the first run of the game in the top of the first off a base hit by Addley Miller. Miller finished the game at 4-for-6 with two runs, four RBI and a double.
In the third inning, it was Emory Zones hitting a single to plate Swisshelm again for the two-run Lady Indian lead. Zornes ended the game at 2-for-4 with two RBI and a HBP.
Hillsboro’s lead increased to 6-0 when the top of the fourth inning saw Chloe Roberts double to right field, scoring Paisley Zink, who was 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.
Then came a double to left field by Miller, scoring Swisshelm and Roberts. Swisshelm finished 2-for-4 with four runs, two RBI and three walks. Roberts ended the contest at 2-for-6 with two runs, two RBI and a double.
The top of the fourth continued with Zornes singling to left field for the RBI as Miller rounded the bases for a run, completing the four-run inning.
Now it was time for the Lady Tigers to join in on all the fun at the plate as their bottom of the fourth saw them plate eight runs to take an 8-6 advantage.
McClain began their scoring with Kalleigh Freeze scoring a run on an error in the outfield, followed with Brie Cummins singling to right field, scoring Kyndee Williams. Cummins went 3-for-5 with two runs, one RBI, a walk and a double. Williams ended the game with a run and two walks.
Then came a single by Amaya Ryan (1-for-5, one run, two RBI) as she sent the ball past short, scoring Brylee Douglas as Douglas went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI and a walk.
Next, it was a big three-run home run by Cami Gall, also scoring Cummins and Olivia Stegbauer for an 8-6 Lady Tiger advantage. Stegbauer finished 1-for-3 with one run, a double and two walks. Gall finished 3-for-5 with a run and three RBI.
HHS took a 10-8 lead in the top of the fifth with their second consecutive four-run inning. Roberts singled to left field, scoring Blair Gard, who finished 3-for-5 with two runs and a double.
Then it was a base hit by Miller which scored Swisshelm (her fourth run of the game), and in the same play on an error, Roberts crossed home plate. Hillsboro added another run in the fifth with Miller scoring on a fielder’s choice.
McClain forced extra innings when they plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 10-10 score. The two runs came on the same sequence of events as Kambriah Tomlin singled to right field, and with that Douglas scored on an error, as did Cummins. Tomlin was 2-for-4 with a run, two RBI and one walk.
Hillsboro took a 13-10 lead in the top of the eighth inning, starting with a home run by Paisley Zink to centerfield. Then came two more runs for HHS with Swisshelm hitting a single to right field, scoring both Leah Vance and Gard.
McClain scored one final run in the bottom of the eighth as Douglas singled to centerfield, scoring Annabelle Pastrimas.
Also at the plate for HHS, Peyton Spurlock was 1-for-5 with one RBI. She was also the winning pitcher as she pitched eight innings, allowing three earned runs with seven strikeouts. Hillsboro had Raeden Workman draw a walk, and Vance tallied a run.
MHS also had Leah Lovett with a walk. The Lady Tigers had three pitchers in the game as Cummins totaled two strikeouts, Williams had one strikeout and Gall collected two strikeouts.
The two teams are scheduled to face each other again on Wednesday, April 29 at Hillsboro High School with a 5 p.m. start.
