Tigers gain big wins over Clinton-Massie and Fairfield

Friday and Saturday were good days at the ballpark for the McClain Tigers as they gained two non-conference wins at Tom Hixson Field at Mitchell Park by defeating the Clinton-Massie Falcons and the Fairfield Lions. 

Friday’s win for the Tigers’ baseball team saw them score all of their runs over Clinton-Massie in the first four innings of play, as they gained a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Both teams scored two runs each in the fourth inning for what became the final 3-2 score in favor of the Tigers. 

McClain totaled five hits in the win and had four errors. CMHS totaled three hits and had no errors. 

Five McClain players each had one hit with Connor Chandler going 1-for-3 with a run and a steal. Kolton Lamb was 1-for-2 with a walk, Carson Chandler finished 1-for-3 with a run and Jayce Storts was 1-for-3 with a steal and one RBI. 

Teammate Matthew Cummins finished 1-for-1 with one RBI, two steals and a walk. Kamden Penwell was hit by a pitch. 

Connor Chandler was the winning pitcher, finishing with seven innings pitched, allowing no earned runs on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Chandler had 106 pitches, 71 for strikes, facing 30 batters.

The Tigers defeated Highland County counterpart Fairfield by a 15-4 score in five innings on Saturday at Tom Hixson Field. 

McClain ended the non-conference game with 15 hits and one error, while the Lions had four hits and two errors.

The Lions led 4-1 after the first inning, and the score was 4-2 after the third inning as the Tigers added one run to their total. McClain broke away from Fairfield with a 13-run fourth inning to gain the run-rule win over the Lions. 

For the Tigers, they had a big game from Kolton Lamb, who was 4-for-4 with one run and three RBI as two of his hits were doubles, plus he added a steal. 

Connor Chandler ended the day at 2-for-3 with four runs, two RBI, one walk and a steal. 

Hunter Peabody was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Easton Ary was 2-for-4 with one run, and Eli Douglas finished 2-for-2 with two runs, a steal, one RBI and a walk. Benny Vangundy was 1-for 2 and had one RBI plus hit a sacrifice fly. 

Also for the Tigers, Carson Chandler was hit by a pitch, scored a run, had a sacrifice fly, collected an RBI and forced a walk. Brycden Whitley scored a run. 

Carson Chandler was the winning pitcher, tossing four innings on the mound with four earned runs and seven strikeouts. Vangundy pitched one inning with no earned runs and one strikeout.

For the Lions, they had Ben Miller finish 2-for-2 with a run and walk. Caleb Rice was 1-for-3 with a run and two steals. FHS also had Zane Collins finish 1-for-3 with a run and RBI. 

The Lions also had Cameron Miller score a run and draw two walks. Weston Baldwin collected one RBI and a walk. Van Bennington also had one RBI and two walks for the Lions, while teammate Greyson Abbott collected one RBI and he also forced two walks. 

Collins pitched for the Lions and had one strikeout. 

The Tigers are now 6-1 overall, while Fairfield moves to 3-7 on the season.
