The Whiteoak boys soccer team won an important non-conference game on Thursday night when they traveled to Greenfield and earned a hard-fought 3-0 shutout victory.

“I thought we played hard tonight against a solid McClain team,” Whiteoak head coach Adam Schelling said after the game. “After playing a tough game last night, I thought we might come out a little bit sluggish, but we didn’t.

“We fought through some tough plays and scored a couple of scrappy goals, which is what we really needed to do.”

The Wildcats got an early goal from sophomore Lucas Pollard just one minute into the match for a 1-0 advantage, which proved to be the only scoring in the first half.

Both teams played extremely hard, and it was a defensive battle for the entire opening half of play.

“Lucas Pollard got us that early goal, and the score remained 1-0 the rest of the half,” said Schelling.

After the defensive gem by both teams over the first 40 minutes, Whiteoak scored the only goals of the second half by junior Christopher Wessner. His first goal and team’s second came at the 33:54 mark of the second period, and his second came on a penalty kick with 22:37 left in regulation.

“Christopher (Wessner) scored our second goal of the game about five minutes into the second half and then later scored our third on a penalty kick,” Schelling said. “I thought our freshman goalie Koltyn Spitznagel was solid at the net all night and made a couple of great saves for us. We actually had three freshmen starting tonight, along with four sophomores.

“Our defense was really solid tonight too getting the shutout, and we needed that. Hopefully we can keep it going.”

Whiteoak improves to 6-6 overall with the victory.
