Basketball Report: Tigers, Mustangs earn road wins; Lions, Wildcats drop Tuesday games

Tigers upend host Piketon
 

The McClain Tigers defeated the host Piketon Redstreaks 54-49 in a non-conference game at PHS, Tuesday. 

The Tigers trailed by five points when the first quarter ended by a 12-7 score, but after the Redstreaks outscored McClain 18-10 in the second, it was McClain trailing by 13 points and a 30-17 score at halftime. 

The third quarter saw an outburst of scoring in the third frame from McClain with a 25-point frame, and their defense held PHS to six points in the same quarter for a 42-36 McClain lead. 

MHS lost the third frame by a 13-12 score, but won the game by five points. 

McClain totaled 16 two-pointers, two 3-pointers, and they were 16-of-26 from the free-throw line. 

Leading the Tigers in the scoring column was Zane Adams with 21 points, finishing with four two-point field goals, two 3-pointers, plus he was 7-of-11 in his free throw attempts. 

Hudson Lovett finished with 11 points, as he collected five two-pointers and was 1-of-3 from the free-throw line. 

Owen Sykes also had 11 points for the Tigers, with four baskets made from two-point range, and he went 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. 

McClain also had five points by Jordan Bell off two baskets from the field and he was 1-of-5 from the free-throw line. 

Riley Cummins ended the game with four points as he was 4-of-6 from the free-throw line, and Brandon Greene totaled two points off a made basket. 

The Redstreaks totaled 16 two-point baskets, four 3-pointers, and they were 5-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Piketon was led in scoring by Bo Henry with 14 points. 

McClain’s win improves their overall record to 8-9 this season. 

The Tigers are scheduled to a road FAC game on Friday, Feb. 7 at Chillicothe, followed with a road game on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Paint Valley.

Wildcats fall at home to Peebles Indians
 

Whiteoak was unable to keep pace with their Southern Hills Athletic Conference counterpart on Tuesday night, falling in a home game against the Peebles Indians by a 54-42 score at WHS. 

Whiteoak’s first quarter saw them score seven points, and they had a 12-point second quarter. On the other side of the court, the visiting Peebles team scored 11 points in the first and 12 points in the second frame for a halftime score of 23-19 in favor of the Indians. 

The second half for the Wildcats had a 15-point third quarter and eight points scored in the fourth. Peebles scored 19 points in the third frame and 12 points in the fourth quarter. 

Whiteoak was led in the scoring column by Sawyer Blair with 16 points, ending the SHAC game with seven baskets from two-point range, and he was 2-of-5 in his free throw attempts. 

Zander Roades finished with seven points, totaling two 3-pointers (first and third quarters), plus he was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. 

Brady Brandenburg and Jonah Michael each scored six points as both players each sank three two-point baskets, with Brandenburg making a basket in the second through fourth quarters. Michael sank all three of his baskets in the second quarter. 

Christopher Wessner finished with three points off a basket from the field, plus he was 1-of-4 from the free-throw line. Jackson Tedford scored two points off a basket in the second quarter, and Zach Igo also scored two points with a first quarter basket. 

WHS totaled 16 two-pointers, two 3-pointers, and they were 4-of-11 with their free throw opportunities. Peebles finished with 16 two-point buckets, five 3-pointers and they were 7-of-13 from the free-throw line. 

Peebles was led in scoring by Bo Johnson with 17 points and Josh McClary with 15 points. Brady Knechtly finished with 10 points. 

WHS is now 5-6 in the SHAC Division II standings and 8-10 overall. Peebles now stands at 8-9 overall and 4-5 in the SHAC SHAC Division I standings.

Lynchburg-Clay earns road win at Felicity-Franklin 

Lynchburg-Clay went traveling on the road for a non-conference game Tuesday evening returned home with a victory, defeating the Felicity-Franklin Cardinals, 68-46.

The 20-point win by the Mustangs saw the score tied with the host Falcons at 17 points apiece when the first quarter concluded. Next there was the Mustangs outscoring the Cardinals 15-7 in the second for a halftime advantage of 32-24. 

The second half included a 14-13 third quarter in favor of the Mustangs, and in the fourth quarter LCHS scored 22 points and the Cardinals added 11 points to their final total. 

LCHS was led win the scoring column by Denver Clinton with a 22-point effort, making 10 two-point baskets and he was 2-of-3 from the free-throw line. 

There was Trevor Niehaus totaling 14 points for the Mustangs with two two-pointers, and he was 10-of-12 from the free-throw line.

The Mustangs also had 12-point games from both Asher Faust and Braedon West. Faust totaled five two-point baskets, and he was 2-of-4 from the free-throw line. West totaled four 3-pointers in the win. 

The Mustangs also had five points from Cody Bell off a two-point basket and a 3-pointer. Elam Faust rounded out the scoring with three points off a 3-pointer. 

“I’m proud of our kids securing a non-conference road win,” LCHS head coach Kyle Pertuest said. “That's never easy, but now we got to get right back to work and prepare for a very good North Adams team.”

The win improves LCHS to an overall record of 8-10 overall. 

Next for LCHS is a SHAC game on Friday, Feb. 7 at home against the North Adams Green Devils.

Lions fall on road at Miami Trace 

Facing the undefeated Miami Trace Panthers Tuesday night the Fairfield Lions didn’t make the non-conference game easy for the host Panthers, but ultimately MTHS kept their undefeated record as they defeated FHS, 52-42. 

Fairfield was outscored 15-6 when the first quarter ended, but the Lions outscored Miami Trace in the second at 17-10 for a 25-23 score in favor of MTHS at halftime. 

The Lions trailed by just two points when the third quarter began, and they gained the upper hand in the same quarter as the Lions scored 13 points in the third quarter, while Miami Trace added 10 points to home side of the scoreboard for a 36-35 lead for the Lions after three frames. 

FHS was held to six points in the fourth quarter, while Miami Trace broke away for 17 points in the fourth to earn the 10-point win over Fairfield. 

For the Lions they had a team-high 13 points from Griffin Friend as he made two 3-pointers, three two-point baskets and he was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. 

Brody Smith totaled 12 points, with a two-point basket, three 3-pointers, plus he had a 1-of-2 performance from the free-throw line. 

The Lions also had nine points scored by Logan McIntosh as his points included a 3-pointer, two two-pointers, and he went 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. 

Fairfield also had three points from Caleb Barerra as he made a two-point shot and he was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. 

Also scoring three points was Quentin McIntosh with a two-point basket and he was 1-of-2 with his free throw attempts. Caleb Rice ended the game with two points with a basket. 

As a team the Lions made nine two-point baskets and they also made six 3-pointers, plus they were 6-of-10 from the free-throw line. 

Miami Trace was led by Adam Guthrie with 23 points, making 10 two-point baskets and was 3-of-6 from the free-throw line. 

The Panthers finished with 18 two-pointers, three 3-pointers, and they were 7-of-13 in their free throw attempts. 

The loss sends Fairfield to an overall record of 12-6 overall. 

Fairfield will play again on Friday, Feb. 7 at home vs. the Whioteoak Wildcats in a SHAC Division II rivalry game.
