On Saturday, Dec. 16, a Wreaths Across America (WAA) ceremony was observed at the Highland County Veterans Memorial at the Highland County Courthouse.

The local observance was organized by Gerold “Buzzard” Wilkin, a member of the Highlanders Chapter 43 of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and several veterans organizations.

In addition to placing a wreath at the Veterans Memorial, Wilkin also recognized Charleene Tarr of the Waw-wil-a-way Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Tarr was given a certificate of appreciation “in recognition of outstanding efforts in helping to further the mission: Remember, Honor, Teach.”

According to Wilkin, Tarr was the first person to organize the local WAA ceremonies at the courthouse, in conjunction with DAR and the Highland County Honor Guard.

WAA is a national effort that grew thanks to a simple picture of wreaths laid at soldiers’ graves covered with snow at Arlington National Cemetery. In addition to Arlington National Cemetery, wreaths are laid at more than 2,700 participating locations across America each December.
