WC's Harcum Gallery to present award-winning colored pencil art

Wilmington College’s Harcum Art Gallery will host an exhibit featuring John Smolko’s unique, award-winning, colored pencil works Jan. 23 through March 1.
A reception honoring the artist and noting the exhibit opening will be Jan. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. Normal gallery hours are weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by special appointment arranged by Hal Shunk, gallery curator of professor of art.
Smolko has been a full-time artist since his retirement in 2008 following a 35-year career teaching secondary school art education in Ohio.
He exhibits his works throughout the United States and has pieces in permanent collections at Butler Institute of Art in Youngstown, the Sargent-Laessig Museum of Fine Arts in Hinckley and the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio in Columbus.
A Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) “Signature Member,” Smolko has been juried into nine international expositions.
He won the 2012 Midwest Color Exhibition and placed second in the 2012 Michigan Colored Pencil Exhibition. Also, Smolko took first place in The Artist’s Magazine’s Over 60 Art Competition in 2012 and was featured on the March issue cover, in addition to placing second in Colored Pencil Magazine’s 2012 art competition and having his work featured in its 2013 calendar.
He has received the Award for Outstanding Recognition, the Canson Fine Artists Materials Award for Outstanding Recognition and various awards for excellence from CPSA chapters in Washington D.C., Detroit and Tulsa.
Smolko won the grand prize in the 2007 American Artists 70th Anniversary Art Competition and continues to be a popular instructor for colored pencil workshops nationally.[[In-content Ad]]
