Coming next month to Southern State Community College’s Appalachian Gateway Center is the annual Holiday Heritage Festival and Sale. Open to the public, this event will take place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at the college’s South Campus, 12681 U.S. Route 62, near Fincastle, just north of U.S. Route 32.

“The goal of SSCC’s Appalachian Gateway Center is to preserve the sacredness of the Appalachian culture, and one way this is accomplished is through the annual Holiday Heritage Festival,” said Amanda Lewis, event coordinator. “What is so unique about the festival is the focus on the traditions and significance of local art forms in Appalachian culture while also providing the joy and celebration of the holiday season for all ages.”

The Holiday Heritage Festival and Sale is a cherished tradition perfect for the entire family. Guests will have the opportunity to browse and admire unique arts and crafts created solely by local artists. Craft vendors will offer jewelry, pottery, soaps/ lotions, quilts/ blankets, metalworking, candles, accessories, decorations and much more.

Aside from viewing these local artworks, the public will have the opportunity to experience seasonal baked goods and herbs, witness various demonstrations in artwork, and enjoy musical entertainment provided by the Southern State Singers choir and local Appalachian and Celtic/folk musicians throughout the festival.

Perfect for little ones, Santa’s Workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for children ages 3-12 accompanied by an adult. Activities for the children include storytelling with Mrs. Claus, $1 craft kits for the children to create gifts and, most importantly, free pictures with Santa Claus! Assistants will be available to help children with the various activities that will provide life-lasting memories.
