Shakespeare comes to Cave Hollow
Tony Copper and his fine cast pulled off the seemingly impossible on the opening weekend of & ;ldquo;Hamlet” at Magic Waters Summer Theatre near Bainbridge.
An awesome task — Shakespeare in Cave Holler — Janny Brizius, producer at Magic Waters, had confidence enough in her director, Copper, to let him give it a go.
"And go, it did!" Brizius said. “The only time in 28 years that I was moved to tears streaming down my face. It was wonderful.”
Copper adapted Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” to the Magic Waters Amphitheatre stage, playing it in Shakespeare’s original language, but in modern dress and setting.
“His adaptation made the difficult drama understandable to me, and so I’m sure, also to the rest of our audience,” Brizius said.
"Tony had also done a marvelous job of casting, with Becca Wise of Hillsboro as the queen; Jonathan Stewart of Greenfield as the king/ghost; Tyler Stewart of Chillicothe as Laertos; Caitlin Carroll of Clarksburg as Ophelia; Don Watts of Hillsboro as Polonius; Chris Wise as Horatio; Adena Wise as Player Queen; Caleb Tong as Bernardo/Guilderstern; and Haley Bourne as Osric."
Hamlet will play for two more weekends, (Aug. 20, 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29) ending the 28th summer season at Magic Waters Theatre. Friday and Saturday shows start at 8 p.m. and Sunday shows start at 7 p.m., with nearly an hour of magical entertainment pre-show by Boonie the Magician. Pre-show dinners may be ordered in advance and are served one hour before show time.
Call (937) 365-1388 for reservations and dinner orders. Magic Waters is on Cave Road, just off of U.S. 50 midway between Hillsboro and Chillicothe.
