The Archbishop of Cincinnati – who recently presided over a farm Mass at
Richard Blankenship’s home in Highland County – will receive a special honor
from Pope Benedict XVI.
The Most Rev. Dennis M. Schnurr is one of three American archbishops who
will receive a pallium, a symbol of his ministry as a shepherd, from the
pope at St. Peter’s Basilica on June 29, according to EWTN, a global
Catholic news service.
“The pope will preside at a Mass on June 29, when he will impose the
pallium upon archbishops hailing from more than 20 different countries,
including Brazil, Korea, India, Zimbabwe and Poland,” according to EWTN.
“The pallium is a white stole made of wool from lambs blessed and
presented to the pope each year on the feast of St. Agnes. The pallium
expresses communion with the bishop of Rome and invokes the image of a
shepherd carrying a sheep on his shoulders.”
Cincinnati’s Local 12 reported that more than 100 priests, deacons and
laity of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati will travel to Italy later this week
for the ceremony.
Archbishop Schnurr celebrated an outdoor Mass June 12 on the Blankenship
farm.
Blankenship called the experience of the farm Mass with Schnurr
“powerful” and upon learning that he would be honored by the pope,
Blankenship said, “He is a holy person. To have that man here at our house
to say Mass is mind-boggling to me. I think about it almost every day.”
