‘Penney’s Carnival of Lost Souls’ to be offered 2 days this Halloween

A Hillsboro family will present the third annual “Penney’s Carnival of Lost Souls” in Hillsboro this Halloween season.
The “haunted house” is a “creepy carnival” themed outdoor walkthrough set up between 610 and 616 North High Street in Hillsboro. The haunted walkthrough will be open on Beggars Night, Oct. 27, as well as on the following Saturday, Oct. 29, from 6 p.m.-midnight each evening.

The “creepy carnival” saw 3,000 visitors in 2014 for its first event, while in its second year, over 5,000 guests visited, Kevin Penney said. This year, the Penneys decided to run the haunted walk-through on two days.
“We’ve got an 11- or 12-foot tall clown with eyes that spin around, and you walk into the clown’s mouth to begin,” Penney said. “That’s all anybody can really see from the road, and it draws people in because it’s kind of wild.
“It was over 700 feet long last year, and we are increasing the length of the walk-through this year.”
The walkthrough is “very safe” and wheelchair-accessible, according to Penney.
Penney said that his family wanted to come up with something entertaining for teens in Hillsboro, and they spend their entire October planning the event.
“It’s so much fun for us,” Penney said.
The Penney family has invested thousands of dollars in the event, including custom-made silicone masks and costumes and a professional laser light show in different areas, along with special sound effects and music in various parts of the tour.
The Penney family is also seeking volunteers to help with the event.
“The more people come out, the bigger and better it will be,” Penney said.

“It should be really intense this year,” Penney said. “It’ll be a little darker and scarier than last year.”
