ODNR celebrates opening of the Dorothy & Corbett Walker Memorial Trail
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) recently held a grand opening for the new Dorothy & Corbett Walker Memorial Biking/Hiking Trail with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
This new trail, located at 24350 state Route 58 in Wellington, connects Findley State Park with the Wellington Reservation, a Lorain County Metro Parks property, enhancing recreational opportunities and honoring the legacy of the Walker family.
"This trail stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of Dorothy and Corbett Walker to their community," said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. "It symbolizes the connections between past and present, linking the Wellington Reservation with Findley State Park and honoring a family that dedicated their lives to making a positive impact."
Dorothy and Corbett Walker, who called their 124.64-acre farm "Walnut Valley," settled there over 75 years ago after Corbett completed his service in World War II. The Walkers witnessed the transformation of Findley State Forest into Findley State Park, where their family enjoyed countless moments of outdoor joy and community involvement.
Corbett Walker's contributions to the local community were extensive. He served on the school board for the Wellington Exempted Village School District, was a founder and first board president of the Lorain County Joint Vocational School and played a significant role in the Rural Lorain County Water Authority. His dedication extended to various other local organizations, including the Herrick Memorial Library Board and the Wellington Recreation Board. Dorothy Walker supported him throughout his endeavors, embodying a spirit of service and community.
The trail also holds historical significance, traversing land that once belonged to notable local figures Charlotte Gunn and Benjamin Wadsworth, who had ties to the Underground Railroad. The Walkers' son, Terry, initiated the project by donating land to create this trail, furthering his family's legacy of service.
The ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft provides exceptional outdoor recreation and boating opportunities by balancing outstanding customer service, education and conservation of Ohio’s 76 state parks and waterways.
