More than 80 people attended the Greenfield Historical Society's Spring Tea held on April 25.
The guests were hosted by the Reverend Ricardo Lewis and his wife, Vonya, in their roles as Frederick Douglas Patterson and his daughter-in-law, Kathleen Patterson. They entertained  the audience with stories of their lives including Frederick's father C.R. Patterson suing the Greenfield School Board to get Frederick admitted to the all-white high school in 1886 and young Fred's further education at Ohio State.
Fred was the first black student-athlete at Ohio State when he played on the OSU football team in 1891, 1892 and 1893. He went on to build the first car built by an Afro-American auto company in the United States and worked with Booker T. Washington in the formation of the National Negro Business League.
Kathleen talked about her role in the family company when it was building buses and specialized trucks in the 1930s.
The guests enjoyed their informal conversations. Many laughs and compliments were paid to Vonya and Ricardo after the performance.[[In-content Ad]]
