On Thursday, Sept. 30, local and guest skateboarders demonstrated their skills at an outdoor show at The Loft, the local youth outreach ministry of Good News Gathering.

Greg Snider, a Detroit-based skateboarder and minister, visited the students of The Loft to share a Christian message and to enjoy skateboarding with local youth.

"We wanted to bring him in for several reasons," organizer Doug Wagoner said. "One, the kids would have fun; two, they would relate to him, and maybe he would be able to break through to someone."

Loft director Randy Butler, who said that Good News Gathering is entering its fifth year as organizer of The Loft, said that the group usually sees an average of 80-90 students during their Thursday night activities. The Loft is run by approximately 20 volunteers, who feed the students and provide games and devotions.

The Sept. 30 skateboarding demonstration is the group's first outdoor meeting.

"Most of these kids don't go to church, so we try to bring the church to them," Butler said.

The Loft is open Thursday evenings for students in 6th-12th grades and is free of charge.
