As area organizations prepare to commemorate Wreaths Across America this month, Gerold and Debbie Wilkin shared this photo from 2011 of one of the first local Wreaths Across America observances.

According to a press release from the local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter, “Wreaths Across America started as a simple gesture of thanks that has grown into a national, yearlong movement of dedicated volunteers and communities coming together to not only remember the nation's fallen and honor their service, but to teach generations about the value of freedom.”

On Friday, Dec. 13 beginning at 10 a.m., the Sons of the American Revolution Highlanders Chapter will celebrate Wreaths Across America with the veterans at the Ohio Veterans Home in Georgetown. The event will include a formal program, presentation of the ceremonial wreath and placement of wreaths at the Walk of Honor.

The Waw-wil-a-way Chapter of DAR will be placing wreaths on headstones of local veterans in the Hillsboro Cemetery Dec. 14.

Also on Dec. 14, a wreath-laying ceremony will be held between 11 a.m. and noon at the Highland County Veterans Memorial at the Highland County Courthouse in Hillsboro. This event will be presented by the Highland County Veterans Honor Guard. Anyone wishing to attend is welcome.
