The Hillsboro Garden Club presented awards of recognition for outstanding achievement in landscape design and maintenance in three categories for the summer season.
The honoree for the commercial category was awarded to Alisa and Steve Lerch of Lerch's Welding, 7901 S.R. 73.
Throughout the season, the blooming colors of iris, lilies, gladioli, buttercups and verbena have been accented by hanging baskets of red geraniums and well-placed hosta. Alisa Lerch says she has relied on soaker hoses during the unusually hot weather, as well as frequent hand watering to keep the plants attractive to customers as well as the loyal group of hummingbirds that frequent the business.
Vella and Howard Stevens of East Walnut Street received the residential landscaping award.
The couple have been tending the garden on their corner lot for over 20 years, though Mrs Vella says her husband is most helpful with the cleaning up part of gardening; she's the planter.
He is retired from Highland Lumber and she is retired from Bundy Tubing in Washington Court House. Mrs. Vella is especially partial to roses, native perennials and birdhouses, which are displayed on the porch and replaced with new designs as they wear.
The village of Leesburg is the Community Landscaping award recipient. Numerous generously sized, exuberantly planted containers have been placed strategically through the community. The planters create a cheerful, elegant welcome to the community.
As members of the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs, the Hillsboro Garden Club is one of several hundred clubs statewide groups who take the opportunity to recognize the beautification efforts of homeowners, business owners and civic organizations.
The Hillsboro Garden Club meets on the fourth Thursday of every month in the Katheryn Granger Floral Hall on the Highland County Fairgrounds. Larry Moore, president, says new members are always welcome to participate in the meetings which include horticultural and flower arranging programs, refreshments and plans for the upcoming flower shows.
