The 57th annual C.A.M.P. (Constructing Assured & Motivated People) will be held the week of Aug. 5-11 at the Resident Camping Facility at Tar Hollow State Park. If you hurry, there may still be space for your youngster to attend this highly acclaimed youth program. Open for young people grades 6-12 (including June 2012 grads), this one-week camp will celebrate its 57th session this summer. Dave and Janice Brizius, along with the Rev. John Selvey, founded this program in 1956, and the Briziuses ("Boonie" and "Janny," to most) continue to this day as founding directors, though these days they have a staff of nearly 100 to help them. Motivational in nature, the camp is also spiritually centered, though completely interdenominational. Often young people attend from as many as 25 different congregations. (There is no need for any church affiliation to attend.) Campers sleep in log cabins in the Tar Hollow Forest (at least one counselor per seven campers) and swim and boat in a beautiful 15-acre lake.
Over 20 areas of activities are available for the campers to choose from, including sports of many kinds, rappelling, crafts, creative writing, photography, journalism, archery, band, choir, dance, canoeing, fishing and many more.
Because of the all-volunteer staff, the camp is offered at just $215 for the entire week -- all-inclusive. There is a $10 sibling discount for more than one camper per family, and some partial camperships are still available at this date.
