Huffman wins art, poetry awards

Gretchen Huffman of Hillsboro has been notified of her awards in the 75th annual Ohio Poetry Day Contest.
The front cover of the 2012 edition features a copy of Huffman's painting of the Highland County Courthouse, which was her entry in the category entitled "Got it Covered."
Huffman also received a third-place award for her poem "No Bug to Hug" and honorable mention in two other poetry categories, "Family Ties" and "Welcome Aboard."
"I've been writing poetry since the second grade in elementary school," Huffman said. "I only recently learned of this contest and am surprised and delighted at my success.
"I don't write prose, which seems to be the most favored. My poems rhyme and contain iambic pentameter."
Huffman was valedictorian of her high school class and is a summa cum laude graduate of Southern State Community College, where she was employed for nearly 20 years as the college's first Director of Public Relations, Communications and Advertising.
Huffman divides her time between Hillsboro and near St. Augustine, Fla. with her husband, Bill.[[In-content Ad]]
