Sixteen teams gathered at Holtfield Station during the 2012 Festival of the Bells to compete in the Hillsboro Uptown Business Association's first annual barbecue cookoff.

Each team received their pork shoulders at 9 p.m. Friday and cooked throughout the night.

On Saturday morning, the judging took place with the following results:

• First Place - St. Mary Catholic School, chief cooks - Scott Parsons and Scott Leggett;

• Second Place - Hillsboro Professional Firefighters, chief cooks - Tina and Dan Warnock;
• Third Place - High Octane, chief cook - Mark Edenfield;
• Showmanship Award - Rick's Appliance, chief cook - Rick Kisling.
"We were extremely pleased with the turnout for the first cookoff," said John Hem, organizer for the event.

"The teams had to endure temperatures of over 100 degrees. I think everyone had a good time and we were especially happy with the number of people from the community that came by Friday evening to visit and join in the fun.

"I want to thank Holtfield Station for their wonderful job of hosting the event. And a big thanks to Community Market for providing the pork shoulders and supplies for the event."
