Home Helpers spreads awareness about Parkinson's Disease

By
Brittany Farley-
The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation estimates that there are nearly 1 million people living with Parkinson’s in the United States. In light of April being National Parkinson’s Awareness Month, Home Helpers of Hillsboro is educating the local community on tips for families who are providing care for a loved one with Parkinson’s disease.

“As a company that works with senior citizens and their families on a daily basis, we understand the challenges that families face when having to provide care for loved ones with chronic illnesses such as Parkinson’s,” said Janet Dean, owner of Home Helpers of South Central Ohio. “Being aware of how to best prepare for caregiving tasks will provide some much needed peace of mind to the family.”

Home Helpers of Hillsboro is educating the community on how they can prepare for providing care for an aging loved one with Parkinson’s by offering the following tips:

 • Have back-up – No matter how much you want to be, you are not superman or superwoman and cannot be there all the time to provide care. Train a few family members who you trust to serve as your backup so that you can move forward with daily responsibilities without worrying or enlist the services of Home Helpers to help with your loved one a few hours a week.

 • Keep a journal – Having a loved one with Parkinson’s requires a lot of time and effort. Paying attention to how they are doing each day is very important. Pay attention to any new symptoms and write them down in a journal to take with you to the next doctor visit. This could be something significant to the doctor who may be able to help by changing medication or offering up some other alternatives to help. All Home Helpers caregivers are trained to pay attention to their client and anything new that they may be doing and alert their loved ones or doctors.

• Remember to recharge your batteries – Providing care is exhausting. Coming up with a plan so that you can remind yourself to have “me” time will prevent caregiver burnout. Home Helpers can help with caregiver burnout. By offering services from a few hours a week to 24/7 care, we can help you enjoy your time spent with your loved one and ease the constant worry of being the sole caregiver.
