Hillsboro Mayor Justin Harsha proclaimed the week of Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week in the City of Hillsboro during a brief ceremony Wednesday, Sept. 11.
Accepting the proclamation Monday morning were Regent Elissa Zornes and member Caroline Siemers of the Hillsboro Daughters of the American Revolution Waw-wil-a-way Chapter.
Sept. 17 marks the 237th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention. The local DAR Chapter will observe this year’s Constitution Week by setting up displays at local libraries, according to Zornes.
According to DAR.org, “Constitution Week is celebrated annually during the week of Sept. 17-23 to commemorate its history, importance and bring attention to how it serves still today. This celebration of the Constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955, DAR petitioned Congress to set aside Sept. 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into public law on Aug. 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
“The aims of the Constitution Week celebration are to: emphasize citizens' responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution; inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America's great heritage and the foundation for our way of life; and encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.”
The community is encouraged to join in ringing bells Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. for one minute for “Bells Across America,” to commemorate the anniversary of the Constitution’s signing.
