Hillsboro Garden Club holds May 25 meeting

The Hillsboro Garden Club met May 25 at the Kathryn Zane Granger Floral Hall. President Nancy Baldwin called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Roll was taken by answering to “Do you have a family member or friend serving in the military?,“ with 17 members and two guests present. As each person answered in the affirmative, we realized how involved we all are in the present conflict and need to appreciate the sacrifices our troops make every day. Nancy welcomed guests Karen Van Buren and Sharon Mills. Minutes of the April 27 meeting were read and approved and Ruth Anna Duff gave the Treasurer’s Report.
Kathy Matthews commented on her Arrangement of the Month. The lovely white vase, a Mother’s Day gift, held a selection of spring flowers and greenery which accompanied gorgeous home-grown peonies. She made the point that purchased flowers can be used to fill out and accentuate a few beautiful blossoms from your garden to create an eye-catching arrangement.
Five members attended the recent OAGC Regional Meeting. Reports included a rave review and detailed explanation of the table arrangements which towered
two feet or more above the table and was comprised of amazing home-grown flowers and greenery from one of the club member’s garden. The Flower Show
resulted in a second place for Pat Lawrence’s ‘May Day – design in a basket’, third place for Dena Benner’s ‘Mother’s Day - corsage’, and fourth place for Cindy Johnson’s ‘April Showers Bring May Flowers – design showing water.’ Kudos to these members as they were showing against outstanding designers of the five surrounding counties that make up Region 16. Nancy Baldwin won the 50/50 Raffle and treated the other members to a stop at the Dairy Queen following the meeting. The Fall Regional Meeting will be held
on October 14 and will be held at Der Dutchman Restaurant in Waynesville.
Rose Marie Cowdrey, Flower Show Chair, reported on her presentation to Jennifer Temple’s 4-H club. Six adults and eleven children attended the
meeting. Hosting the meeting at the Floral Hall, she demonstrated how to create several artistic designs with simple and inexpensive components. She
also gave them tips on preparing their specimens for horticulture classes. The club members seemed excited with the prospects of showing at the Fair
and their participation should make for an outstanding Junior Class exhibit in September.
Get Well cards will be sent to Neal Cook, Gloria Wright, and Nancy Sonner. We were happy to have Dena Benner and Louise Sprinkle feeling better and able to join us once again.
Jennifer West reported that judges from OAGC had visited the beautification projects at the Floral Hall and the Hillsboro Public Library. They were
impressed with the Library project so far and will visit again in the Fall to further assess progress. We were reminded to take lots of pictures of
before, during, after, and throughout the seasons to include in the contest entry book. Pat Lawrence reported that “Immortality”, a reblooming white iris, has been
planted recently and hopefully will be in full bloom during their fall return visit. The judges also were impressed with the updated beds at Floral Hall, remarking on the appearance of the new sign and complimenting our choice of shrubbery.
Discussion regarding our OAGC sign on the Clubs & Organizations boards at the city limits will be further discussed and decided in January when the
current rental term is over.
OAGC is encouraging garden clubs to recognize outstanding area businesses, institutions, and residential homeowners that have done an outstanding job
in beautifying their grounds. Motion was made and seconded that our club participate in this endeavor. Several suggestions for each category were
made and will be taken into consideration by the club before final selections are made. These recognitions are tentatively planned to be made
seasonally.
Several tour announcements were received: Washington Court House Garden Club is holding a walking tour on June 27 or July 11 (rain date) with
proceeds to benefit the renovation of the Washington Cemetery Fountain. No information was given on cost of tickets or where to purchase them at this
time. JayBird Farms in Buford will be hosting Lavender Days at their farm from June 20 through July 11 where you can enjoy the sights and smells of
this versatile herb.
Our next meeting will be June 22 at the Floral Hall. Nancy Baldwin and Cindy Johnson will provide arrangements, Nancy Sonner and Ed Davis will host.
The meeting was adjourned and Dena Benner presented her program, entitled “Wildflowers of Ohio.” Little-known information about our common ‘weeds’
or wildflowers was given and then members were asked to match the plant description to its picture on the presentation board.
Indian cucumber root, Dutchman’s britches, wild potato vine, Bouncing Bett, teasel, yucca, burdock, white snake root, may apple, and trumpet honeysuckle
were ten wild flowers common to our area. To our surprise several are edible when properly prepared, some, such as yucca, may be found in a flower
bed, and many can be fatal if handled improperly. Many of us were familiar with some of her examples but none familiar with all of them. Dena
recommended we purchase her favorite book, “Wild Flowers of Ohio,” and learn which ones are friendly and which can be deadly.
Refreshments of Chocolate Cake with Toffee Topping and Strawberry Cake Dessert were served with Iced Tea and Lemonade by hosts, Nancy Baldwin, Juanita Carson.
Attendees were Diana Baker, Nancy Baldwin, Dena Benner, Juanita Carson, Rose Marie Cowdrey, Ruth Anna Duff, Carol Gorby, Danny Gross, Beryl Gruelle,
Arlene Huiet, Cindy Johnson, Pat Lawrence, Kathy Matthews, Larry Moore, Mary Smith, Louise Sprinkle, and Jennifer West.
The club is always welcoming new members. For more information, call Jennifer West at 393-8056 or Nancy Baldwin at 981-2876.
