The Hillsboro Garden Club held its monthly meeting on Sept. 28 at Floral Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Nancy Baldwin with 21 members answering roll call. Guests Sunny Quigley, Anna Robinette, Patty Newman, and Jackie and Monica Cowdrey were welcomed to the meeting and sale.
Rose Marie Cowdrey reported that OAGC judge Myrna Cordray was very impressed by the quality of both Highland County Fair Flower Shows and remarked that all the designs were so well done that she had to look for small faults in order to select the winners. She was also very pleased with the quantity and quality of the Junior Division entries.
Larry Moore was appropriately selected to be our candidate for OAGC Outstanding Garden Club Member. Besides serving as president of the greater Cincinnati Dahlia Society, he produces our Dahlia Show at the fair, participates in our Flower Show, and is our very willing go-to person for all manly chores.
Kathryn Matthews and Nancy Sonner served delicious refreshments of ice cream and brownies, fresh apple cider, nuts, and pretzels, which were enjoyed by all.
Following the abbreviated business meeting, our annual Fall Plant Auction was held. Some of the plants offered were white, pink, and purple butterfly bushes, 'Live Forever' sedum, coral bells, various house plants, hostas, irises, decorative grasses, evening primrose, orchid cactus, lily of the valley, mums, and many, many more. Good-natured competition led to some spirited bidding, but most went home with at least 1-2 plants and a gleam in their eye at the prospect of an early spring and happy times in the garden.
