April 23 has been declared as National Pygmy Goat Day. The Highland County Goat Association will be at Ventura’s Feed and Country Store from 5-7 p.m. with Pygmy Goats to celebrate their special day.

Small but mighty, the Pygmy Goat is a one-of-a-kind animal which can provide companionship and teach responsibility. The National Pygmy Goat Association describes the Pygmy Goat as “hardy, animated, good-natured and gregarious, a docile, responsive pet, a cooperative provider of milk, and an ecologically effective browser. Pygmy Goats are assets in a wide variety of settings, and can adapt to virtually all climates. They are ideal personal livestock suited to today’s smaller homestead. Pygmy Goats are loving pets, great show animals, and ideal first livestock for a young 4-H or FFA member” (www.npga-pygmy.com).

Pygmy Goats provide much personality and will add tremendous joy to your barn. They have their own unique characteristics which set them apart from other miniature goat breeds. Pygmy Goats do not have blue eyes, which is a common misconception. They are short with a lot of muscling unlike other miniature breeds which are thinner and more “dairy.”

Please stop by Ventura’s Feed and Country Store for a visit on National Pygmy Goat Day.
