Hamilton featured at SSCC's meet-the-artist event

Local photographer Rachael Hamilton will be the featured guest for a Meet-the-Artists event 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, in the Learning Resources Center (LRC) on Southern State Community College’s South Campus, 12681 U.S. Route 62, near Sardinia. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
Taking her late father’s lead behind the camera, Hamilton maintains the family businesses, Hazelbaker Photography, as its lead artist. She also works in sales at The People’s Defender newspaper in West Union.
“As a child, I always had a passion for being behind the camera,” said Hamilton. “I grew up on a farm with my parents and two older siblings in the small, but beautiful Adams County. My passion for photography came at a young age from watching my father developing his film in the darkroom in the basement of our home. As I got older, my passion grew every day.”
Along the way, Hamilton says she honed her own skills by enrolling in a vocational school graphic arts program and college courses in photo editing.
“While attending Ohio Valley Vocational School, my father – who was also the teacher – taught me everything I needed to know about the programs we use to edit and the different styles of photography,” said Hamilton. “Before entering college at Shawnee State University, I got my first real job photographing my friends’ wedding. While in college, I took several Photoshop classes, along with more photography courses, to build my knowledge with the new technology that was being used. With all this new knowledge, I was coming back and actually teaching my feather a thing or two!
Hamilton and her husband, Justin, have two children, Brooklyn and Gavin.
“A few years went by and my father passed away in 2005. After his passing, I made it my goal to do everything I could to keep our business up and running. With the help from my family, and the skills my father handed down, we are still up and running. Photography is my passion.”
