Southern Ohio Genealogical Society

On Thursday, May 10 at 7 p.m., the Southern Ohio Genealogical Society will provide an opportunity for Highland County and surrounding area residents to get a firsthand view of the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Hillsboro.

This 160-plus-year-old Hillsboro landmark has had an influence on the formation of Hillsboro and Highland County.

The program will be held at the historic church which is located at the corner of North High and East North streets. The program will include a tour of the historic church following the presentation.

John Glaze, co-author of the book "The Story of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church," will be presenting the program from little known information which is now in print through this book. The book, which has been 20 years in the making, was completed earlier this year.

This story begins with a brief history of Hillsborough, then quickly moves into the interesting tale of how St. Mary’s Episcopal Church was formed, the background of the men who were the founders, the changes which took place throughout the 160-plus years of her existence.

The work, which was begun by John Carson, has been completed by John Glaze.

In addition to the 200-page book, which is now available, there is an added bonus to genealogy enthusiasts.

The birth, baptism and death records which were part of the early church are not in the book. However, these church records have been made available to SOGS in a CD format for interested researchers, thanks to St. Mary’s and John Glaze.

The book in print format or on a DVD will be available for sale the evening of the presentation as well. The program is open to the public and all interested individuals are encouraged to attend.
