Genealogical Society to conduct tombstone cleaning and restoration

On Thursday, Sept. 15 at 6:30 p.m., the Southern Ohio Genealogical Society will be conducting a demonstration program on the reading, cleaning and restoration of old tombstones. The program will be held at the Baptist Cemetery, New Market Township, Highland County.
The program will be conducted by Bob Patton and Dwight Crum, both experienced in working in old cemeteries. Topics to be covered in the workshop will include: Making a tombstone cleaning kit, use of mirrors and chalk, “do’s and don’ts,” cleaning marble, Cleaning without water or chemicals, various stone types, and tombstone photography.
The first thing you will learn is "do no harm."
Workshop instructors will provide you with the tools and ideas of how to clean with minimal intrusiveness, how to read, and how to photograph the old stones.
Whether you are an avid genealogist, or just simply interested in locating your ancestor’s old burial sites and being able to read and photograph the tombstones, you don’t want to miss this workshop opportunity.
You do not have to be a member of the genealogical society to attend. The demonstration program is open to the public.
If planning to attend, please wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes – however, walking will be very minimal. Attendees might also want to bring a folding lawn chair for their comfort.
The cemetery is located as follows: from Hillsboro take highway 62 south to New Market. In New Market turn left (east) onto New Market Road.
