Carol Gorby-
The Hillsboro Garden Club held its monthly meeting on July 27 at Floral Hall. A delicious "Potluck Picnic" was held prior to the meeting. Members and guests enjoyed a variety of tasty salads, casseroles, and desserts. This yearly event is a group favorite, and no one goes home hungry. The meeting followed and was called to order by President Nancy Baldwin. Twenty-one members and one guest were present.
Fran Larkin reported that Louise Sprinkle, a long-time member of our garden club, is being honored for her many years of community service by induction into the Highland County Women's Hall of Fame. She will be honored at the annual dinner on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. Her name will be inscribed on the plaque that hangs in the Highland County Courthouse, where she will join other remarkable women of Highland County.
Rose Marie Cowdrey, Flower Show Chair, reported that she and Beryl Gruelle attended the OAGC Convention Flower Show, where Beryl received two second place awards and Rose Marie garnered two fourth place ribbons. Rose Marie also displayed the lovely plaque she received as winner of the Faye Collins Designer of the Year Award. The convention will be held at Shawnee State Park in 2011 and at Hueston Woods State Park in 2012.
Highland County Fair Flower Show entries should be received by the Fair Board by Aug. 20. Members were urged to enter many horticultural specimens and to try a new class in Floral Designs. Gloria Wright reported that she will be replacing the shrubs that died at Floral Hall with new ones this weekend. She and her committee will be doing final sprucing up closer to fair time.
Jennifer West, Civic Service Chair, reported that the bed at the Highland County Library is looking good and faring pretty well through the extreme heat this summer.
The club is always welcoming new members. For more information, please contact Nancy Baldwin at 981-2876 or Jennifer West at 393-8056.
