Dr. Randy Overbeck to share 'Heroes' presentation with HCRTA

Dr. Randy Overbeck will present the multimedia presentation "Teachers: The Real American Heroes" at the Nov. 5 luncheon of the Highland County Retired Teachers Association.
Dr. Overbeck is a veteran educator who recently retired as assistant superintendent of the Xenia Community Schools. During his 14 years with the district, he moved that district from academic emergency to a District of Excellence in 2008. He is also the winner of the National Teacher-Leader Award and the author of the award-winning novel "Leave No Child Behind."
During his presentation, Dr. Overbeck will share an inspiring and uplifting message about the heroic, life-altering work of teachers. He states, "At no point in recent memory has the job of teaching and nurturing the next generations of scientists and secretaries, of lawyers and laborers, been so challenging. More students than ever are entering school with 'baggage,' and the expectations for all students have never been higher. But right now, the noble profession of teaching is under attack from pundits and politicians. Instead of recognizing the incredible sacrifices great teachers make for their students and their community, educators have become the latest scapegoat for the nation's woes, both financial and social."
In the tradition of great storytellers, he will use the narratives of real-life teacher-heroes to recognize and pay tribute to the remarkable work great teachers do every day to meet the often overwhelming needs of their students. He will also briefly discuss his new novel, "Leave No Child Behind," a thriller about a terrorist takeover of an Ohio high school. He will share how the book's heroine personifies the heroism of actual teacher-heroes.
Any retired teacher or retired school staff employee is invited to join the HCRTA members for this special program. Activities start with a social hour at 11 a.m., followed by the luncheon at noon. Dr. Overbeck's program will begin about 12:45 p.m. The luncheon will be at the Highland County Senior Citizens Center.
Reservations are required and may be made by contacting Kathy Levo at (937) 393-4951 The luncheon cost is $8, and reservations must be made by Oct. 29.
