DAR chapter presents awards, scholarships

The Waw-wil-a-way chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Saturday, March 2 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Hillsboro and presented its Good Citizens awards and scholarships.

Mary Ann Nicol and Charleene Tarr announced the winners of the DAR Good Citizens Awards and Scholarship Contest.

There are currently six schools in Highland County eligible to participate in the program. Four of the six participated this year.

Students selected this year are Brenna Nicole Simmons of Fairfield; Ethan Wesley Emery of Hillsboro; Tyler Keith Roberts of Whiteoak; and winner of the competition, Devin McCollum of Hillsboro Christian Academy.

The competition consists of two parts: personal (70-percent) and essay (30-percent). The personal portion includes extracurricular activities, community involvement and how they demonstrate the qualities of a good citizen, such as dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. For the essay, students had to write a paper with the title "Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It" and respond to the focus question "How are our freedoms and responsibilities and good citizens changing?"

McCollum presented his essay to the DAR chapter and was awarded a certificate, pin, wallet card and check. His work, plus two letters of recommendation, an official grade transcript and the judges' completed evaluation forms, were forwarded on to the DAR district chairman.

The other "Good Citizen Students" will be recognized and receive their awards at various awards ceremonies to be held in May.
