Veterans Services outreach,
open house May 10
The Highland County Veterans' Services office will hold an open house
and veterans outreach from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Thursday, May 10 at 135 N. High
St., in uptown Hillsboro. Highland County Veterans Service Commission Executive Director Robin Brown invites all veterans to stop by and see what services the office can provide. In addition, the VA Mobile Center will be at the local office for
veterans on May 10. The Highland County Veterans' Services office also will be distributing more than 4,000 flags and 400 grave markers for county cemeteries prior to Memorial Day. For more information, call 393-8686.
Hillsboro-area AAUW
accepting scholarship applications
The Hillsboro-area AAUW is currently accepting applications for the 2012
scholarships. The applicant must be a current resident of Highland County
and must have resided in Highland County for the last two years. The
scholarships are awarded to "non-traditional" female students whose
education has been interrupted or delayed. Applications are available at the
libraries in Highland County or any AAUW member. All applications must be

PERI meeting May 10
The May meeting of PERI will be held May 10 at 10 a.m. at the Highland
County Senior Citzens. Rainee Angles of the theater department at Southen
State Community will be speaking on the basic history of theater

Historical Society
• On May 4, the Highland County Historical Society will host a Member
Appreciation Potluck at the Highland House museum, starting at 6 p.m.

• On May 19 at 7:30 p.m., the Highland County Historical Society will
hold their monthly Heritage Music Series concert and social hour. Call for

Recovery program
meets on Tuesdays
The Celebrate Victory Recovery Program meets every Tuesday night at 7
p.m. at ReaLife Church, located at 230 West South Street, Hillsboro.
Alzheimer’s Support
Group meetings
The Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati will sponsor a
Highland County Alzheimer’s/Dementia Family Caregiver Support Group on the
third Monday of each month from 5-6:30 p.m. at Highland District Hospital.

Eagles host Thursday bingo
The Hillsboro Eagles host bingo on Thursday nights. Doors open at 5:30
p.m., and games start at 7 p.m.
AA meetings in Rainsboro
The Rocky Fork Lake/Rainsboro area has a new meeting of AA at Rainsboro
United Methodist Church, Saturdays from 10-11 a.m. In addition, there will
be Al-Anon support meetings Saturdays at the church.
House of Prayer
board meetings
The Highland County House of Prayer, Inc. will hold monthly board
meetings on the last Wednesday of each month. The meetings will take place
at the home of Marvin and Becky Gotherman, 100 West Union Pike, Hillsboro at

Flea markets at
Sardinia Veterans Park
A monthly flea market will be held at the Sardinia Veterans Park on the
first Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., beginning May 5 through
Sept. 1. Food will be served at these events. Anyone with crafts or other
items to sell is welcome. There will not be a set rental fee; it will be by
donation only. All donations will be used to upgrade and maintain the
Veterans Park. Anyone interested in a space or information can call (937)

Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Highland County Administration

Engineer’s Office
summer hours
The following are the 2012 summer hours for the Highland County
Engineer’s Office and County Highway Department. Effective through Oct. 4,
2012, the Highland County Engineer’s Office and County Highway Department
will be working four 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30
p.m. After-hour emergencies will continue to be handled by calling the
Highland County Sheriff at 393-1421.
Central Ohio Classic Country Opry
announces upcoming shows
The Central Ohio Classic Country Opry will be returning to the Clay
Township Park (the old Buford School) the first and third Saturday of each
month.
Shows include:
• May 5 – Heather Roush and Scott Stamper are the headliners.
• May 19 – Terri Barnett and Rich Martin.
Admission is $8, and children under 12 are admitted free.
Concessions are open throughout the evening and the doors open at 6
p.m., the show is from 7-9:30 p.m.
Fairfax United Methodist Church dinner
Fairfax United Methodist Church will host a fried chicken dinner on
April 28 at 5 p.m. Music will follow at 7 p.m. There is no charge and is
everyone welcome.
May Friendship Day May 4
May Friendship Day will be held on Friday, May 4 at 6 p.m. There will be
a salad carry-in meal and we will meet in Riber Hall at Hillsboro First
United Methodist Church. This is a Church Women United celebration and the
theme is "Listening to my Sisters" with a program and Bible study after the
meal. Fellowship of the Least Coin (FLC) will be collected. For information,

Sinking Spring United
Methodist Church fish fry
The 14th annual fish fry of the Sinking Spring United Methodist Church
will be Saturday, April 28 at the church. The fish fry will begin at 4:30
p.m. and continue until 7:30 p.m. or sold out. The event is being sponsored
by the Men's Fellowship Group of the church. Free will donation accepted.
First Presbyterian Church of
Greenfield to serve lunch April 29
The First Presbyterian Church of Greenfield will be serving lunch on
April 29 from noon-2 p.m. The menu will include a variety of grilled
sandwiches, rosemary potatoes, tossed salad, fruit salad, melt-in-your-mouth
desserts, and drinks. The cost of the meal is a free-will donation. The
proceeds benefit the church/manse renovation fund. Carry-out is also
available.

The Highland County Emergency Management Executive Board will meet May
16 at 7 p.m. at the EMA office, located at 1487 North High Street, Suite
500.
Soup's On Free Meal
The Soup's On Free Meal will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in
Hillsboro on Saturday, April 28 from 5-6:30 p.m. The menu will include
sausage/baked beans, tossed salad, desserts and drinks. Praise and worship
will begin at 4:30 p.m.
FOE Auxiliary hosts
Humane Society benefit
The Auxiliary of Hillsboro Fraternal Order of Eagles will host a benefit
for the Highland County Humane Society on Sunday, April 29. Doors will open
at noon. Come enjoy the day supporting this benefit. There will be raffles,
a bake sale and a cornhole tournament. Registration for cornhole will begin
at 12:30 p.m. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Come out, join
the fun and show your support for the Highland County Humane Society. Pets
will be available for adoption.
Free Will Baptist Church
hosts revival May 6-9
The Hillsboro Free Will Baptist Church, located at 6360 U.S. Route 50,
will host a springtime revival, Sunday, May 6 through Wednesday, May 9. The
Rev. John Mead from Columbus will be the guest speaker. There will be
special singers on Sunday morning and nightly. Evening services begin at 6
p.m. on Sunday and 7 p.m. during the week. Everyone is invited.

Whiteoak High School alumni will meet Saturday, May 26 at 7 p.m. in the

OVRDC caucus
meeting May 9
The Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission's Second Round Highland
County Caucus meeting will be held Wednesday, May 9 at 11 a.m. at the
commissioners' office of the Administration Building, 114 Governor Foraker
Place, Hillsboro. The primary purpose of the meeting will be to discuss and
review the county's existing and new projects in terms of whether they
address priority envelopment needs and then rank those projects eligible for
Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) funding. Identification of potential
Economic Development Administration (EDA) projects will also occur. Updated
information will be presented on the status of the ARC and EDA programs, and
the June 22 deadline for pre-applications will also be reviewed. The meeting
is open to the general public, local government officials and nonprofit
organizations. Organizations with potential projects are encouraged to send
a representative. Comments by attendees on regional or county

St. Mary Episcopal Church, located at 234 N. High St., Hillsboro will
hold its spring rummage sale Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Lynchburg Lions Club
sponsors circus May 6
The Lynchburg Lions Club is sponsoring the nationally known Culpepper
and Meriwether Circus on Sunday, May 6 at the Lynchburg-Clay Middle School
athletic area on the southern edge of Lynchburg. There will be two separate
shows. The first one will be at 2 p.m., and the second will be at 4:30 p.m.
The public is invited to watch the free circus set-up beginning at 10 a.m.
Advance tickets are on sale from all Lions members. Tickets are also on sale
at the Lynchburg-Clay Elementary School each day from 3-3:30 p.m. and at the
middle school and high school during lunch periods. Everyone is encouraged
to buy tickets in advance. Cost is $6 for children ages 2-12 and $9 for
everyone over age 12. Prices will be higher on show day. All proceeds go to

Democratic Women
basket bazaar May 7
The Highland County Democratic Women will hold their annual basket
bazaar with a carry-in dinner and auction on Monday, May 7 beginning at 6:30
p.m. at the Highland County Administration Building. Meat, drinks and table
service will be provided. The guest speaker will be Liz Brown, political
director of the Ohio Democratic Party and daughter of Senator Sherrod Brown.
Also present will be Randy Mustard and Brenda Losey, candidates for the two
county commissioner positions; Gary Heaton, candidate for county treasurer;
Pete Pence, candidate for state representative; and Larry Burns, candidate
for county recorder. Each attendee is urged to bring a canned good to be

luncheon May 6
There will be a benefit luncheon from noon-1:45 p.m. Sunday, May 6 held
in the Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene annex, 8230 U.S. 50. The menu will
include fish, French fries and cole slaw. Donations go to the Hillsboro
Christian Academy.

pots, potted, hanging baskets, etc. at great prices. Great for Mother's Day

The 83rd anniversary meeting of the Buford Alumni Association will be
held on Saturday, May 26 at the Clay Township Park Building (Old Buford
