VSC meets on first Mondays
The Highland County Veterans Service Commission will be holding its
public meetings on the first Monday of every month at 5 p.m. until further
notice.
Veterans Service Office
closed Dec. 24, Dec. 31
The Highland County Veterans Service Office will be closed on Monday,
Dec. 24 and Monday, Dec. 31 for the holidays. Also, effective for 2013, and
beginning Tuesday, Jan. 8, the Highland County Veterans Service Commission
will meet every two weeks on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at
5 p.m. at 135 N. High Street, Hillsboro.
The meetings are open to the public.
Cowan Lake
Association events
The Cowan Lake Association of Sportsmen will hold an all-you-can-eat
spaghetti dinner on Friday, Dec. 21 from 4-7 p.m. at their clubhouse,
located at 331 Beechwood Rd. (off Route 350), Wilmington. Prices are $6 for

Clothing donations needed
New Life Church and Ministries’ Ivy’s Clothing Closet is currently in
need of donations of baby and men’s clothing. Donations can be made
Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, 6101

Wilkin Alumni Memorial Scholarship Tournament
The Lynchburg-Clay FFA Chapter will be hosting the annual Greg Wilkin
Memorial Scholarship Basketball Tournament on Dec. 26-27 at the
Lynchburg-Clay High School gym. The Lynchburg-Clay Young Farmers originally
created this tournament so the FFA Chapter could award scholarships to the
graduating seniors that meet the guidelines set forth by the Lynchburg-Clay
Agriculture Education Department. The tournament is held during each
Christmas holiday and is the main source of income for the scholarships.
Donations are also received from family, friends and others interested in

Hillsboro mayor mulls
removal of Main Street

Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings is considering the removal of the traffic
lights on West Main Street at the public library, “in an ongoing effort to
streamline Hillsboro’s traffic congestion.”
According to a news release from the mayor’s office, the traffic lights
would be replaced by stop signs on Willettsville Pike and Oak Street or with
yellow flashing caution lights on Main Street and red flashing stop lights
on Willettsville Pike and Oak Street.
“The loss of the high school at that location warrants a fresh look at
the necessity for the traffic lights,” the mayor said. “This change would
only occur if the citizenry weighs in and feels this would be a benefit.”

Highland House Museum gift shop open
A pioneer holiday gift shop is open at the Highland House Museum through
Dec. 30. Hours are Fridays, 1-5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays, 1-4 p.m.
Over 20 local artisans have crafts for sale in the museum shop. A special
exhibit of old teapots is also open for viewing.
Dodsonville Community Church Chrismon service Dec. 23
The Dodsonville Community Church invites the public to a Chrismon
Service, Dec. 23 at 7 p.m. The Chrismon Service is a celebration for God and
a way to show praises and thanksgiving and to remember why we celebrate
Christmas. In this program, the church takes ornaments that refer to our
Lord and Savior and place them on a Christmas tree. Each ornament tells a
story of God's plan. Refreshments will be served. The church is located at
1810 U.S. 50, Lynchburg.

St. Benignus Church in Greenfield will be offering free and delicious
Christmas dinners to those in need on Christmas from noon-2 p.m. Dinners can
be picked up at the church at 218 S. 2nd St. or can be delivered free of

Harriett Christian Church service
Harriett Christian Church Pastor Marlyn Davis invites everyone to the
Dec. 23 service. Wayne Shaffer will be singing in the 10:30 a.m. service.
The church is located two miles south of Marshall on Harriett Road.
Sonner Chapel hosts
Christmas in the Chapel
Christmas in the Chapel will be held at Sonner Chapel, hosted the United
Methodist Church, East Danville. Services will be held Sunday, Dec. 23 at
6:30 p.m. Services will include a children's Christmas program, singing by
the Here By Grace choir, communion and refreshments.
Buford Church of Christ
Christmas Eve service
The Buford Church of Christ at 2457 St. Rt. 138 in Buford will have a
traditional Christmas Eve service on December 24, at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is
welcome to attend.
Hoxworth blood drive
Dec. 26 in Lynchburg
The Hoxworth Blood Center and the Lynchburg Area Joint Fire & Ambulance
District will host a blood drive on Wednesday, Dec. 26 from 1:30-7:30 p.m.
The drive will be held in the community room. For an appointment, contact

T-shirt and have a chance to win a gift card for free gas.

free meal Jan. 26
There will not be an open door free meal at the Greenfield Methodist Church
in December. The next open door meal will be Jan. 26 from 4-5:30 p.m.
