Christmas dinner Dec. 15
The Rocky Fork Community Alliance invites the public to their annual
Christmas dinner Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Highland County Airport, 9500
North Shore Drive, Hillsboro. Mingle and jingle time begins at 6 p.m. with
dinner at 6:30 p.m.
Southern State singers
The Southern State Singers will present their 14th annual Christmas
concert 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 234 N. High
St., Hillsboro.
Health Department
vision clinic Dec. 11
The Highland County Health Department will hold a vision clinic on
Tuesday, Dec. 11. The clinic is free of charge and is open to children under
the age of 21. Thomas Ritter, OD will provide examinations. For more

The Highland County Veterans Service Commission will be holding its

Christmas at the Cabin
It’s time for the 32nd annual Christmas at the Cabin with Dave and Janny
Brizius at 7757 Cave Road, east of Hillsboro off U.S. 50. The cabin will be

Boy Scouts collecting
food for area pantries
The local Boy Scouts Troop 226 and Cub Scout Pack 37 are collecting
canned foods to support area food pantries, and they need your help. Please
bring nonperishable food donations and place them in the specially marked
boxes in the lobbies at Fifth Third Bank, Southern State Community College
Central Campus, Merchants National Bank (100 North High St. and 1479 North

Association events
The Cowan Lake Association of Sportsmen will hold an all-you-can-eat
spaghetti dinner on Friday, Dec. 21 from 4-7 p.m. at their clubhouse,

Wilkin Alumni Memorial Scholarship Tournament
The Lynchburg-Clay FFA Chapter will be hosting the annual Greg Wilkin
Memorial Scholarship Basketball Tournament on Dec. 26-27 at the
Lynchburg-Clay High School gym. The Lynchburg-Clay Young Farmers originally
created this tournament so the FFA Chapter could award scholarships to the
graduating seniors that meet the guidelines set forth by the Lynchburg-Clay
Agriculture Education Department. The tournament is held during each
Christmas holiday and is the main source of income for the scholarships.

Knights of Pythias Lodge
Christmas party Dec. 15
The Knights of Pythias Lodge 696 will host a Christmas party on
Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Angola I.O.O.F. Lodge 231, 2158 state Route 73,
Belfast. Festivities will begin at 5:45 p.m., with dinner starting at 6:15

Hillsboro mayor mulls
removal of Main Street

Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings said this week he is considering the
removal of the traffic lights on West Main Street at the public library, “in
an ongoing effort to streamline Hillsboro’s traffic congestion.”
According to a news release from the mayor’s office, the traffic lights
would be replaced by stop signs on Willettsville Pike and Oak Street or with
yellow flashing caution lights on Main Street and red flashing stop lights
on Willettsville Pike and Oak Street.
“The loss of the high school at that location warrants a fresh look at
the necessity for the traffic lights,” the mayor said. “This change would
only occur if the citizenry weighs in and feels this would be a benefit.”

Basketball Tournament
The 2012 Pee-Wee Christmas Basketball Tournament will be held at
Whiteoak High School beginning Dec. 16. Entry fee is $40 per team. Fourth,
fifth and sixth grade divisions for both boys and girls will be available.
All players for each team must attend the same school.

Brunch with Santa
Brunch with Santa will be held Sunday, Dec. 16 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the
Lynchburg Area Joint Fire and Ambulance District community room, 8123 state
Route 135, Lynchburg. The brunch will include all-you-can-eat pancakes,
bacon, sausage, milk, juice, coffee and sweet tea. Meals are $4 for children
and $6 for adults. Free pictures with Santa will be taken and made available

First Presbyterian Church of Greenfield dinner Dec. 9
The First Presbyterian Church of Greenfield will be serving dinner on
Sunday, Dec. 9 from noon-1:30 p.m. The menu will include ham loaf, harvest
potatoes, green beans, coleslaw, desserts and drinks. Carry-out will be
available. Donations are appreciated. All donations will go to the
church/manse renovation fund. Everyone is welcome.
Highland House Museum gift shop open
A pioneer holiday gift shop is open at the Highland House Museum through
Dec. 30. Hours are Fridays, 1-5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays, 1-4 p.m.
Over 20 local artisans have crafts for sale in the museum shop. A special
exhibit of old teapots is also open for viewing.
Highland County Board Assessment Report review Dec. 18
The Highland County Board Assessment Report will be reviewed at 6 p.m.
on Tuesday, Dec. 18 at Hills and Dales Training Center, 8919 U.S. 50,
Hillsboro. The regular monthly Board of DD meeting is scheduled to follow
immediately after. The meetings are open to the public. Anyone wishing to
make public comment must notify the board president seven days in advance of
the meeting. This can be done by calling 393-4237.
Immunization clinic Dec. 10
On Monday, Dec. 10, an immunization clinic will be held at the Highland
County Health Department, 1487 North High St., Suite 400, Hillsboro from 1-4
p.m. The CARE-A-VAN Health Assessment Clinic will visit the Greenfield
Pamida parking lot on Tuesday, Dec. 11 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Dodsonville Community Church Chrismon service Dec. 23
The Dodsonville Community Church invites the public to a Chrismon
Service, Dec. 23 at 7 p.m. The Chrismon Service is a celebration for God and
a way to show praises and thanksgiving and to remember why we celebrate
Christmas. In this program, the church takes ornaments that refer to our
Lord and Savior and place them on a Christmas tree. Each ornament tells a
story of God's plan. Refreshments will be served. The church is located at

Christmas in the Chapel will be held at Sonner Chapel, hosted the United
Methodist Church, East Danville. Services will be held Sunday, Dec. 23 at
6:30 p.m. Services will include a children's Christmas program, singing by
the Here By Grace choir, communion and refreshments.

The Buford Church of Christ at 2457 St. Rt. 138 in Buford will have a
traditional Christmas Eve service on December 24, at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is

Hoxworth blood drive
Dec. 26 in Lynchburg
The Hoxworth Blood Center and the Lynchburg Area Joint Fire & Ambulance
District will host a blood drive on Wednesday, Dec. 26 from 1:30-7:30 p.m.
