VSC meets on first Mondays
The Highland County Veterans Service Commission will be holding its
public meetings on the first Monday of every month at 5 p.m. until further
notice. The next meeting is Nov. 5.
Christmas at the Cabin
It’s time for the 32nd annual Christmas at the Cabin with Dave and Janny
Brizius at 7757 Cave Road, east of Hillsboro off U.S. 50. (The road is
open!) The cabin will be open from Oct. 19-Dec. 16 on Tuesdays-Saturdays
from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays from 1-5 p.m. Also, the cabin will be open

Liberty Park
yard waste site closed
The yard waste site at Liberty Park is closed until further notice. Leaf
pick-up is scheduled for mid-October to early December. Call the mayor’s

Altrusa accepting
scholarship applications
Altrusa International of Highland County is accepting applications for
educational scholarships ranging from $250 to $500. Applications may be
obtained from any Highland County Public Library, Chatfield College, Shawnee
State University, Southern State Community College or Wilmington College.
Eligibility criteria are as follows: Have been a Highland County resident
for a minimum of two years, must be at least 25 years of age, currently
enrolled in an accredited institution and have successfully completed a
minimum of 12 credit hours in an accredited institution. Applications must
be postmarked by Nov. 26 and received by Dec. 1.
Fairfield Schools to hold
public meeting on treasurer
The Fairfield Local School District Board of Education hereby gives
public notice that it will hold a public meeting pursuant to the provisions
of Ohio Revised Code §3309.345 to consider the re-employment of J. Bart
Barber, treasurer, as a superannuate to the same position for which he will
retire from effective Dec. 31, 2012. The public meeting will occur on Nov.
19 at 6:15 p.m. at the Fairfield Local School District Office.
AAUW, Altrusa collect
for annual book sale
The Hillsboro area branch of the American Association of University
Women and Altrusa are preparing for the annual book sale. Barrels for the
collection of gently used books have placed in the Leesburg, Greenfield,
Lynchburg and Hillsboro libraries, Kroger and Community Market in Hillsboro.
No magazines, encyclopedias, textbooks or condensed books, please. The book
sale will be held at the county Administration Building in Hillsboro on
Thursday, Nov. 1, noon - 6 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; and
Saturday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Money raised from the sale provides
scholarships and supports literacy projects for Highland County residents.
Election Day dinner
The Order of the Eastern Star’s Election Day dinner will be held Nov. 6
from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Masonic Temple, 136-1/2 North High St.,
Hillsboro. Meals cost $5 and will include beans, noodles, slaw, cornbread,
tea, coffee, pie and cake.
Cowan Lake Association events
Cowan Lake Association of Sportsmen will host a meatball dinner on
Friday, Nov. 16 from 4-7 p.m. at their clubhouse on 331 Beechwood Road. The
event is open to the public and costs $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $2
for children.

Methodist Church hosts
election day dinner
The Prospect United Methodist Church will host an election day dinner on
Tuesday, Nov. 6. The food will be served between the hours of 11 and 7. It
will include bean soup, chili, cornbread, sloppy joes and coneys, slaw,
vegetable trays with dip, desserts and drinks. Everyone is encouraged to
attend. A freewill offering will be accepted.
Christmas in the Country
Christmas in the Country features unique gifts created by four talented

Buckskin Harvest Festival
The Buckskin Harvest Festival will be 5-9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 at
Buckskin Elementary School. Dinner will be in the cafeteria from 5-7 p.m.
The menu will include pulled pork sandwiches, scalloped potatoes, corn,
coleslaw, applesauce, homemade desserts, hot dogs and soft drinks.
The games and entertainment begin at 5 p.m. The auction begins at 7 p.m.
in the cafeteria Vote for your favorite King/Queen, Prince/Princess & Little
Prince/Princess from 5-7:30 p.m. The pageant begins at 8:30 p.m.
Senior Center
Veterans Day dinner
The Highland County Senior Center will hold a Veterans Day dinner and
program on Friday, Nov. 2 from 6-8 p.m. All veterans are invited for a free
dinner. The community is also invited to show their appreciation. Dinner for
non-veterans is $5, and all money from the dinner will be donated to a
veterans program. The event is sponsored by Ponderosa, Hospice of Hope and

Jingle Bell Bazaar
Hills and Dales’ 24th annual Jingle Bell Bazaar will be held Saturday,

The Southern Highland Joint Fire District’s annual spaghetti dinner will

AAUW/Altrusa book sale
The AAUW Altrusa Book Sale will continue Friday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. until 5
p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The book sale will be
held at the lower level of the Highland County Administration Building on
Governor Foraker Place in Hillsboro. Money raised from the sale provides
scholarships for women who are returning to school and supports literacy

Pricetown Church of Christ
presents "Pray for America"
The Pricetown Church of Christ will present a "Pray for America"
patriotic service on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. The program will focus on the
history of religion in America, key events that have affected religion in
the United States and the role of Christian leaders in government. Mark
Faust will lead the program, and others will offer prayers for America
throughout the evening. The public is encouraged to attend. Fellowship and
refreshments will follow the program.
PERI meets Nov. 8
The November meeting of Highland County PERI will meet Nov. 8 at 10 a.m.
at the Highland County Citizens Center. The program will be a presentation

Election Day dinner
Sinking Spring United Methodist Church will be holding an Election Day
dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The dinner will begin at 11 a.m. and continue
until 7:30 p.m. or sold out. The event is being sponsored by the United
Methodist Women. The menu will include: chicken and noodles, various
homemade soups, beef barbecue, hot dogs, sloppy joes, coleslaw, assorted
homemade desserts and beverages. The dinner is being held in the Fellowship

The Lynchburg Lions Club will hold their monthly pancake and sausage
breakfast on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Lynchburg Lions Club/Gun Club Building
on Sharpsville Road in Lynchburg. The breakfast will be served from 8-11
a.m. It will feature an all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfast, plus

SSCC Board of Trustees
committee to meet Nov. 2
The Student Success Committee of the Southern State Community College
Board of Trustees will meet 1-2:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2 in Room 106 of the
college's Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro.
This committee was formed following the trustees' participation in the
ACCT Governance Institute for Student Success. This initial meeting will
involve a discussion of the committee's role and updates on current
initiatives and data. The meeting is open to the public.

TEA Party hosts
election night party
Highland County TEA Party members and friends are invited to an election
night party at the North High Pizza Hut in Hillsboro. The buffet will be
open. Come around 8 p.m. and share the election returns on the four TVs.

On Saturday, Nov. 10, a free coat giveaway will be held from 10 a.m. - 4
p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 1345 state Route 247, south of
Hillsboro. Many various sizes of coats, hats, scarves, gloves and misc.
items are available, along with soup, sandwiches and drinks.
SATH turkey
bingo Nov. 17
SATH will hold its 10th annual turkey bingo Saturday, Nov. 17 at the
Hillsboro Elementary School cafeteria. During the night, 25 turkeys will be
given away. The evening's event will end with a game of coverall in which
the winner gets a complete Thanksgiving dinner. The cost will be a donation
of 25¢ per card.
Prior to bingo, a soup supper will begin at 5 p.m. to kick off the
evening. Homemade chicken and noodles, chili, beans and cornbread and lots
of delicious desserts will be available.
