Hillsboro Christian Academy events
Hillsboro Christian Academy will hold a rummage sale Saturday, Nov. 3 from 8
a.m. - 3 p.m. at the school, 8230 U.S. 50, Hillsboro. If you have items you

• The annual Hillsboro Christian Academy Veterans Day Program will be held at
9:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8. All veterans are invited to attend.

• Hillsboro Christian Academy's monthly donation dinner will be held Sunday,
Nov. 12 from noon - 1:45 p.m. Suggested donation price is $5. Meals include
pulled pork, baked beans, salad, dessert and a drink.

Prospect United
Methodist Church hosts
election day dinner
The Prospect United Methodist Church will host an election day dinner on
Tuesday, Nov. 6. The food will be served between the hours of 11 and 7. It
will include bean soup, chili, cornbread, sloppy joes and coneys, slaw,
vegetable trays with dip, desserts and drinks. Everyone is encouraged to
attend. A freewill offering will be accepted.

Christmas in the Country
Christmas in the Country features unique gifts created by four talented

Highland County
Emmaus Gathering
The Highland County Emmaus Gathering will be on Tuesday, Oct. 30
beginning at 7 p.m. It will be held at the St. Mary's Episcopal Church,
Hillsboro. The gathering will have a speaker, special music and prayers for
joys and concerns as well as a meditation before sharing in Holy Communion.
The walk to Emmaus is an ecumenical three-day weekend to train church
leaders. Emmaus has grown into a worldwide movement. The Upper Room of the
UMC in Nashville, Tenn. governs it. If you have ever been curious about the
Walk to Emmaus, please come and find out what everyone has been talking
about.
Everyone is invited, not just those who have attended an Emmaus weekend.
Plan on coming out and sharing music, worship, food and fellowship. Please
wear your nametags and bring some food to share.

New Vienna Firehouse
fall festival Oct. 27
The public is invited to the New Vienna fire station for a meal, open
house and fun for all ages. Called the “Firehouse Fall-Fest,” the event
begins at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 and will include a kids' pedal tractor
pull, great food, a corn hole tournament at 5 p.m. and fire equipment for
the kids to see up-close. A meal of homemade chili, hot dog or sandwich,
dessert, plus beverage will cost $6 for adults, $3 for kids 12 and under.
All proceeds will be used for community activities and local charitable
causes. This event is sponsored jointly by the New Vienna Lions Club and the
Clinton Highland Joint Fire District. Members of both groups will be serving
the meal until 7 p.m. The fire station is located on S.R. 28, about one mile

Highland County Senior
Citizen Center pumpkin pageant
The Highland County Senior Citizen Center will hold a pumpkin pageant
fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 26 at 12:30 p.m. during their monthly birthday
dinner. Local businesses are asked to submit a painted pumpkin (no carved
pumpkins, please) along with a $25 entry fee. First, second and third
runners-up and king/queen will be awarded. Non-placing contestants will
receive an honorable mention. All contestants will be display at the
center's haunted house and Halloween Festival/Trick-or-Treat night. The
"king/queen" pumpkins will be displayed around the county in various local

Countywide
curfew ends Oct. 31
Countywide curfew will continue through Oct. 31 for all persons under
the age of 18. The curfew will run through Oct. 31 and require all persons
under the age of 18 to be off the streets and in their homes by 10 p.m.,
Monday through Friday and by midnight Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The curfew does not apply where children are accompanied by parents,
legal guardians or custodians. Exception is also made for children attending
church, school or employment activities.
Enforcement will be handled by all law enforcement agencies, including
the sheriff's department, city or village police and juvenile probation
officers.
After consultation with law enforcement, it is requested each
jurisdiction set beggar's night on Thursday, Oct. 25 from 6-8 p.m.

meets on Tuesdays
The Celebrate Victory Recovery Program meets every Tuesday night at 7
p.m. at ReaLife Church, located at 230 W. South St., Hillsboro.

Alzheimer’s Support
Group meetings
The Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati will sponsor a
Highland County Alzheimer’s/Dementia Family Caregiver Support Group on the

The Rocky Fork Lake/Rainsboro area has a new meeting of AA at Rainsboro
United Methodist Church, Saturdays from 10-11 a.m. In addition, there will

Haunted Hills at
Magic Waters
This year's Haunted Hills at Magic Waters, 7757 Cave Road, Bainbridge,
is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through Oct. 28. Tickets go on sale
at 7 p.m. and on Friday and Saturdays, the trail stays open until 11 p.m. On
Sundays, it closes at 10 p.m.
Admission is $7 for adults and $4 for children. Groups rates are available

Christmas at the Cabin
It’s time for the 32nd annual Christmas at the Cabin with Dave and Janny
Brizius at 7757 Cave Road, east of Hillsboro off U.S. 50. The cabin will be
open from Oct. 19-Dec. 16 on Tuesdays-Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and
Sundays from 1-5 p.m. Also, the cabin will be open on Thanksgiving from 4-9

Liberty Park yard waste site closed
The yard waste site at Liberty Park is closed until further notice. The
city administration is working to find an alternative site and will notify
the public of its location when it is available. Leaf pick-up is scheduled
for mid-October to early December. The official times will be announced next

Altrusa accepting
scholarship applications
Altrusa International of Highland County is accepting applications for
educational scholarships ranging from $250 to $500. Applications may be
obtained from any Highland County Public Library, Chatfield College, Shawnee
State University, Southern State Community College or Wilmington College.
Eligibility criteria are as follows: Have been a Highland County resident
for a minimum of two years, must be at least 25 years of age, currently
enrolled in an accredited institution and have successfully completed a
minimum of 12 credit hours in an accredited institution. Applications must
be postmarked by Nov. 26 and received by Dec. 1.

Fairfield Schools to hold
public meeting on treasurer
The Fairfield Local School District Board of Education hereby gives
public notice that it will hold a public meeting pursuant to the provisions
of Ohio Revised Code §3309.345 to consider the re-employment of J. Bart
Barber, treasurer, as a superannuate to the same position for which he will
retire from effective Dec. 31, 2012. The public meeting will occur on Nov.
19 at 6:15 p.m. at the Fairfield Local School District Office.

AAUW, Altrusa collect
for annual book sale
The Hillsboro area branch of the American Association of University
Women and Altrusa are preparing for the annual book sale. Barrels for the
collection of gently used books have placed in the Leesburg, Greenfield,
Lynchburg and Hillsboro libraries, Kroger and Community Market in Hillsboro.
No magazines, encyclopedias, texts or condensed books, please. The book sale
will be held at the Highland County Administration Building in Hillsboro on
Thursday, Nov. 1, noon - 6 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; and
Saturday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Money raised from the sale provides
scholarships and supports literacy projects for Highland County residents.

Sugar Grove United Methodist Church
Fall Festival Oct. 28
Sugar Grove United Methodist Church will host a Fall Festival Sunday,
Oct. 28 from 2-6 p.m. Everything is free, including a meal, dessert and
drink; entertainment, featuring local band Rock N Country; and lots of fun
activities for the kids, including a costume parade and candy giveaway. The

Project Linus
blanket-making
workshop Oct. 27
A Project Linus blanket-making workshop will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Sardinia Church of Christ, 7130 Bachman Drive,
Sardinia. Project Linus is a volunteer organization which contributes new
handmade blankets to provide comfort and security to seriously ill and
traumatized children.
Requirements for blankets are simple: All blankets must be new,
handmade, and washable. They may be crocheted, fringed, knitted, sewn, tied,
or quilted.
The website, www.projectlinus.org, offers free patterns and links to
other sites supporting Project Linus. Please bring a sack lunch and drink as
well as supplies for the type of blanket you will be making, such as yarn,
knitting needles, crochet hooks, sewing machine, or whatever it is you use.
Minimal supplies will be offered such as yarn and fabric for afghans and
quilts. (No baby-sitting will be provided.)
Project Linus also will be accepting donations of blankets you may
already have finished or if you are cleaning out your stash, we would love
to be the recipient of any new, child-friendly pieces of flannel, cotton,
yarns or any batting you may have lying around.

The Hillsboro Cub Scout Pack 37 will host their annual baked goods

KAMP Dovetail Halloween

KAMP Dovetail will host a Halloween 5K Fun Walk/Run on Saturday, Oct. 27
at Rocky Fork State Park, 9800 North Shore Dr., Hillsboro. Registration
begins at 9 a.m. with the race to follow at 10 a.m. The cost is $30 per
participant. Costumes are encouraged.

Health Department
hosts screenings
The Highland County Health Department will host a vascular screening
event for patients 50 years of age or older on Wednesday, Nov. 14.
Screenings are $60 and will take place at the Health Department office at
1487 North High St. An appointment is required and may be obtained by
calling the Health Department at (937) 393-1941. This is a joint effort by
the Highland County Health Department, The Christ Hospital and Highland
District Hospital.
The noninvasive, painless screenings are effective in detecting three
prevalent vascular diseases: carotid artery disease, peripheral artery
disease (PAD) and abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). Carotid artery disease
leads to strokes, the third-leading cause of death in the U.S. PAD affects 8
to 12 million people in the U.S. Individuals with PAD suffer a five-fold
increased risk of a heart attack with two to three times greater risk of
dying from a heart attack than those without PAD. One in every 20 Americans
over the age of 50 has PAD. Ruptured AAA result in more than 15,000 people
dying annually in the U.S., and it is estimated that more than one million
people are living with undiagnosed AAA. At least 95 percent of these can be
successfully treated if detected prior to rupture. A large AAA may produce
no symptoms prior to rupture and is usually fatal.

Senior Citizens Center
haunted house Oct. 27
The Highland County Senior Citizen Center will host their fifth annual
Purdin's House of Pain haunted house Oct. 26-27 from 7-11 p.m. nightly and a
a Halloween Party/Festival Saturday, Oct. 27 from 7-10 p.m. The haunted
house is sponsored by Turner Funeral Home, VFW and Heskett Insurance.
Admission for each event is $1. The Halloween party will include trick or
treat, free games and storytelling. All kids get a free trick-or-treat bag,
hot dog, chips and a drink. There will be a costume contest for kids and
adults on Oct. 27. Age divisions are 0-2, 3-6, 7-13 and 14-adult. There will
be a carved or painted pumpkin contest with prizes for the ugliest/scariest
pumpkin and the prettiest pumpkin. Over 20 businesses will be passing out

The Order of the Eastern Star's Election Day dinner will be held Nov. 6

tea, coffee, pie and cake.

First Presbyterian Church
fundraising dinner Oct. 28
The First Presbyterian Church of Greenfield will serve lunch on Sunday,
Oct. 28 from noon-1:30 p.m. The menu will include a variety of homemade
soups, grilled cheese sandwiches, tossed salad, dessert, and drinks. The
cost of the meal is a free-will donation. Carry-out will be available. The
proceeds from the lunch will go to the church/manse renovation fund.
