A rummage sale will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Saturday,
Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The church is located at 234 North High St.,
Hillsboro.

Highland County Senior
Citizen Center pumpkin pageant
The Highland County Senior Citizen Center will hold a pumpkin pageant
fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 26 at 12:30 p.m. during their monthly birthday
dinner. Local businesses are asked to submit a painted pumpkin (no carved
pumpkins, please) along with a $25 entry free. First, second and third
runners-up and king/queen will be awarded. Non-placing contestants will
receive an honorable mention. All contestants will be display at the
center's haunted house and Halloween Festival/Trick-or-Treat night. The
"king/queen" pumpkins will be displayed around the county in various local

Highland Soil & Water
Conservation District’s
70th annual meeting Oct. 11
The Highland Soil & Water Conservation District’s 70th annual meeting
will be held on Oct. 11 at the Highland County Training & Employment Center
(Hi-TEC) located at 1575 N. High Street in Hillsboro from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The
Highland SWCD will be hosting a social gathering with light refreshments
being served. Various events will be held throughout the evening including
the Supervisor election from 5:00–6:30 p.m., a silent auction to benefit
conservation programs and the presentation of awards is scheduled to begin
at 6:30 p.m. One supervisor will be elected to serve a three-year term. Jeff
Roehm and Larry Shannon are the candidates on the ballot. You may vote on
the evening of the annual meeting or by requesting the proper absentee
ballot forms from the Highland SWCD office at (937) 393-1922, ext.3.
Reservations are not required to attend the annual meeting.

Countywide
curfew Oct. 1-31
Countywide curfew will commence Monday, Oct. 1 for all persons under the
age of 18. The curfew will run through Oct. 31 and require all persons under
the age of 18 to be off the streets and in their homes by 10 p.m., Monday
through Friday and by midnight Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The curfew does not apply where children are accompanied by parents,
legal guardians or custodians. Exception is also made for children attending
church, school or employment activities.
Enforcement will be handled by all law enforcement agencies, including
the sheriff's department, city or village police and juvenile probation
officers.
After consultation with law enforcement, it is requested each
jurisdiction set beggar's night on Thursday, Oct. 25 from 6-8 p.m.

meets on Tuesdays
The Celebrate Victory Recovery Program meets every Tuesday night at 7
p.m. at ReaLife Church, located at 230 W. South St., Hillsboro.

Alzheimer’s Support
Group meetings
The Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati will sponsor a
Highland County Alzheimer’s/Dementia Family Caregiver Support Group on the
third Monday of each month from 5-6:30 p.m. at Highland District Hospital.

The Hillsboro Eagles host bingo on Thursday nights. Doors open at 5:30
p.m., and games start at 7 p.m.

AA meetings in Rainsboro
The Rocky Fork Lake/Rainsboro area has a new meeting of AA at Rainsboro
United Methodist Church, Saturdays from 10-11 a.m. In addition, there will
be Al-Anon support meetings Saturdays at the church.

House of Prayer

The Highland County House of Prayer, Inc. will hold monthly board
meetings on the last Wednesday of each month.
The meetings will take place at the home of Marvin and Becky Gotherman,

central committee meetings
The Highland County Republican Central Committee will meet on the fourth
Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Republican Party headquarters, 200 West

VSC meets on first Mondays
The Highland County Veterans Service Commission will be holding its
public meetings on the first Monday of every month at 5 p.m. until further
notice.

Board of Elections' notices
In compliance with the Ohio Secretary of State Directive 2012-35, the
Highland County Board of Elections will hold the following hours for
in-office absentee voting for the Nov. 6 general election:
• 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9;
• 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday through Friday, Oct. 10-12;
• 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, Oct. 15-19;
• 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, Oct. 22-26;
• 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday, Oct. 29 through Nov. 1;
• 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2.
The Highland County Board of Elections would like to remind the citizens
of Highland County that the deadline to register to vote is Oct. 9 by 9 p.m.
Voting registrations are available in the Board office, local public
library, bureau of motor vehicles or county treasurer's office. If you are
already a current registered voter and need to update your address, you can

Celebration of Life
Oct. 6 at SSCC
The Southern Ohio Pregnancy Center will hold a Celebration of Life Event
on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Southern State Community College track, located
at 100 Hobart Dr. in Hillsboro, beginning at 9 a.m. The morning will be
filled with carnival fun, including face-painting, popcorn, peanuts, cotton
candy and more. The event is for walkers of all ages, “trikers” (ages 2-6)
and “bikers” (motorcycle riders). Their fundraising goal is $20,000. Those
who cannot participate in person may donate money to be a “virtual
participant.”

Strike out homelessness
The Highland County Homeless Shelter will hold a "strike out
homelessness" event at Highland Lanes from noon-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.
Bowling will cost $40 per lane for two hours. There will be a 50/50 drawing,
silent auction and raffles.
Donation of these items are needed at the Highland County Homeless
Shelter: Paper towels, bathroom tissue, soap and laundry detergent.

Carmel Church of God
Harvest Party Oct. 13
Carmel Church of God will host a Harvest Party on Oct. 13 from 2-6 p.m.
at 5554 Carmel Road, Hillsboro. There will be a bonfire, hayrides, games,
food, trunk and treats and an inflatable bounce castle. Everyone is welcome.

Haunted Hills at
Magic Waters
This year's Haunted Hills at Magic Waters, 7757 Cave Road, Bainbridge,
will start on Sept. 28 and run Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through Oct.
28. Tickets go on sale at 7 p.m. and on Friday and Saturdays, the trail
stays open until 11 p.m. On Sundays, it closes at 10 p.m.
Admission is $7 for adults and $4 for children. Groups rates are available

Liberty Park yard waste site closed
The yard waste site at Liberty Park is closed until further notice. The city administration is working to find an alternative site and will notify the public of its location when it is available. Leaf pick-up is scheduled for mid-October to early December. The official times will be announced next month. For questions, call the mayor’s office at 393-5219.

Altrusa accepting
scholarship applications
Altrusa International of Highland County is accepting applications for
educational scholarships ranging from $250 to $500. Applications may be
obtained from any Highland County Public Library, Chatfield College, Shawnee
State University, Southern State Community College or Wilmington College.
Eligibility criteria are as follows: Have been a Highland County resident
for a minimum of two years, must be at least 25 years of age, currently
enrolled in an accredited institution and have successfully completed a
minimum of 12 credit hours in an accredited institution. Applications must
be postmarked by Nov. 26 and received by Dec. 1.

VFW fish fry Oct. 6
A fish fry will be held at the V.F.W. Post 9094 (behind Dairy Queen) in
Hillsboro on Saturday, Oct 6. from 4:30-7 p.m. Meals are $7 and include all
the fish you can eat, fries, slaw, hush puppies and soft drink. The event is
open to the public.

Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene
to host agricultural services Oct. 14
The Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene will host an agriculture service on
Sunday, Oct. 14 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the church, located at 8230 U.S.
50 east in Hillsboro.
The public is invited to this special service that will recognize
farmers within the church congregation and throughout the Highland County
community. Special events will include Galen and Lynn Neal providing hay
wagon rides, a petting zoo, a straw maze and a cookout. Tim Sheeley will
provide a display in agricultural education. Pastor Tom Zile and the
congregation welcome the community to this special event.

Fairfield Schools to hold
public meeting on treasurer
The Fairfield Local School District Board of Education hereby gives
public notice that it will hold a public meeting pursuant to the provisions
of Ohio Revised Code §3309.345 to consider the re-employment of J. Bart
Barber, treasurer, as a superannuate to the same position for which he will
retire from effective Dec. 31, 2012. The public meeting will occur on Nov.
19, 2012, at 6:15 p.m. at the Fairfield Local School District Office. The
board provides this notice at least sixty (60) days prior to the date of the
superannuate’s re-employment and certifies that the public meeting required
pursuant to Ohio law shall take place between 15 and 30 days before the
re-employment of J. Bart Barber as a superannuate. All interested persons
are invited to attend.

The South Salem United Methodist Church will hold a rummage sale from 9

AAUW, Altrusa collect
for annual book sale
The Hillsboro area branch of the American Association of University
Women and Altrusa are preparing for the annual book sale. Barrels for the
collection of gently used books have placed in the Leesburg, Greenfield,
Lynchburg and Hillsboro libraries, Kroger and Community Market in Hillsboro.
No magazines, encyclopedias, texts or condensed books, please. The book sale
will be held at the Highland County Administration Building in Hillsboro on
Thursday, Nov. 1, noon - 6 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; and
Saturday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Money raised from the sale provides
scholarships and supports literacy projects for Highland County residents.
