Democratic picnic Aug. 5 features
Ted and Frances Strickland
The Highland County Democratic Party will hold its annual picnic on
Sunday, Aug. 5 at the AmVets Park on North Shore Drive in Hillsboro from
4:30-6:30 p.m. The event is free to the public, with a freewill donation
accepted.
The featured speakers will be former Governor and First Lady Ted and
Frances Strickland and Liz Brown, the daughter of U.S. Senator Sherrod
Brown. Local candidates will be in attendance: Peter Pence for 91st state
representative; Gary Heaton for county treasurer; Brenda Losey for county
commissioner; Randy Mustard for county commissioner; and Larry Burns for
county recorder. The menu will include hamburgers (from Hunter's Meats), hot
dogs, potato salad, chips, baked beans, desserts and drinks. The public is
cordially invited to attend. An auction will be conducted by auctioneer
Frank Grover. Door prizes will be awarded at the end of the evening.
Hillsboro Day at the Reds
Sunday, July 22 will be Hillsboro Day at Great American Ball Park for
the Cincinnati Reds’ game versus the Milwaukee Brewers at 1:10 p.m. Tickets
must be purchased in advance of game day, and $24 tickets may be purchased
for $16 when ordered online at www.reds.com/hillsboro.

to meet July 23
The Lynchburg-Clay Board of Education will meet in regular session on
Monday, July 23 at 7 p.m. at the Lynchburg-Clay Board of Education building.

fundraiser Aug. 11 at fairgrounds
Highland County 4-H & Extension will hold a fundraiser Aug. 11 at the
Wharton Building at the Highland County Fairgrounds. A pancake supper will
be held from 5-7 p.m., followed by a live auction at 7 p.m. For more

The Celebrate Victory Recovery Program meets every Tuesday night at 7

Alzheimer’s Support
Group meetings
The Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati will sponsor a
Highland County Alzheimer’s/Dementia Family Caregiver Support Group on the
third Monday of each month from 5-6:30 p.m. at Highland District Hospital.

The Hillsboro Eagles host bingo on Thursday nights. Doors open at 5:30

AA meetings in Rainsboro
The Rocky Fork Lake/Rainsboro area has a new meeting of AA at Rainsboro
United Methodist Church, Saturdays from 10-11 a.m. In addition, there will
be Al-Anon support meetings Saturdays at the church.

meetings on the last Wednesday of each month. The meetings will take place

summer hours
The following are the summer hours for the County Engineer’s Office and
Highway Department. Effective through Oct. 4, the engineer’s office will be
working four 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
After-hour emergencies will continue to be handled by calling the sheriff at
393-1421.
HDH Foundation

to hold 55th reunion
The Hillsboro High School class of 1957 will hold their 55th class

Junior Fair Queen Contest candidates sought
The Highland County Agricultural Society invites any girl who is a
member of a youth organization (4-H, FFA, FCCLA, Farm Bureau Youth, Girl
Scouts, etc.) to be a candidate for the 2012 Highland County Junior Fair
Queen Contest. She must have turned 15 by Jan. 1, 2012. The contest is open
to girls from 15-19 years of age. Candidates will be judged on poise and
conduct, application, personal interview with judges and oral presentation
on this year’s fair theme, “Where your adventure begins.”
The contest is Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Highland County Fairgrounds.
Applications can be obtained at the Highland County Extension Office, 112
Governor Foraker Place. The application deadline is Aug. 17. No late
applications will be accepted.

Benefit dinner July 21
A spaghetti benefit dinner will be held for Thomas Goins and family at
the St. Mary Catholic Church, 212 South High Street, Hillsboro on July 21
from 6-9 p.m.
Goins, 69, of Seaman, is retired from General Motors, a war veteran and
has been driving semis for about 10 years. On May 28, Goins was driving a
tractor-trailer near Bath, N.Y. when the truck veered off the roadway and
rolled onto its side, spilling 3,000 gallons of asphalt sealer. Both Goins
and his dog were seriously injured. Goins was hospitalized in Rochester,
N.Y.

Christ celebrates 100 years
The Hollowtown Church of Christ will celebrate its 100-year anniversary
on Sunday, Aug. 26. Regular church services will be held with Sunday School

Aglow International meets July 23
Aglow International will hold their monthly meeting July 23 at 7 p.m. at
the Ponderosa Banquet Room. This month, Aglow International will welcome
Sandra Wilson and her daughter, Brianna Knight.
Wilson has attended Open Door Christian Fellowship Church in Chillicothe
for 15 years, under the direction of her pastors Mark and Nicki Pfeifer.
Wilson helps Nicki Pfeifer teach at the prophetic school of ministry and has
been on the church's prophetic team for seven years. Knight has been married
to her husband Josh for 14 years, and they have two children. Knight is the
worship leader in the children's ministry at the same church as her mother
and is the head of the dance team. The group will also discuss the
International Aglow Conference, which will be held Oct. 4-6.
Free eye screenings in Greenfield
On July 21, during the Greene Countrie Towne Festival from 11 a.m.-1
p.m., the Greenfield Lions Club will be doing free eye screenings at New
Directions. Screenings will be performed using the new technology of the
SureSight machine to screen for signs of lazy eye, a leading cause of
blindness in children. This screening is recommended for all children ages 3
to 6. Be sure to bring your children and grandchildren because the earlier
you catch it the better chance there is of correcting the problem. Also,
while you are at the festival be sure to stop to say "hi" at the Lions Club
food booth and grab a bite to eat.
Open Door
free meal July 28
The Open Door free meal will be held at the Greenfield United Methodist
Church on Saturday, July 28. Serving will be from 4-5:30 p.m. The menu will
be pulled pork, potato casserole, fresh vegetables and fruits. Everyone is
welcome.
VFW fish fry July 20
VFW Post 9094 will host a fish fry on Friday, July 20 from 4:30-7 p.m.
The cost is $7 but includes all the fish you can eat, fries, slaw, hush
puppies and a soft drink.

Emmaus gathering
The Highland County Emmaus gathering will be held on July 31 at the
Nazarene Church on U.S. 50 east of Hillsboro. The gathering is open to
everyone. Many people have completed their Emmaus Walk and this is an
opportunity to come together with old and new friends. A notice has been
sent to those who submitted their e-mail addresses. If possible, bring some
food to share with the community.

Veterans Service Commission to meet
on first Monday of each month
Effective August 2012, the Highland County Veterans Service Commission
will be holding its public meetings on the first Monday of every month at 5
p.m., beginning Aug. 6 until further notice. Meetings are open to the
general public and will take place at the Highland County Annex located at
135 N. High Street in Hillsboro.
