The Highland County Board of Elections will be closing for the Ohio
Secretary of State conference. The office will be closed Jan. 25-27 and will
re-open Jan. 30.
SSCC Board of Trustees
meets Jan. 22-23
The Southern State Community College Board of Trustees will meet
beginning 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, through 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at Murphin
Ridge Inn, 750 Murphin Ridge Road, West Union. The meeting is open to the

Lanny Bryant’s Gospel Homecoming
Show to play Colony Theater
Christian nights at the Colony Theater in Hillsboro will feature Lanny
Bryant’s Gospel Homecoming Show, including three of the area’s finest
Southern Gospel
groups. Kindred Spirit, Majestic Sound Quartet and Soul Purpose will grace
the Colony stage Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
The cost for the concert is $5 and a can of food. Come out and enjoy a
great night of music and support a couple of great causes – The Colony
Theater and the local food pantry. (Note: The canned food donation is
optional but would help the local food bank.)
TEA Party to host
candidates forum
Local voters will have a chance to hear from the candidates for Highland
County Commissioner at a forum sponsored by the Highland County TEA (Taxed
Enough Already) Party group.
The event will be held Monday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Hi-TEC building
in Hillsboro.
All six candidates who have filed petitions have been invited to attend
and speak to the public about questions regarding Highland County’s future,
ideas or plans for development, budgetary restraints and the local economy.
This forum is being made available to the public so that voters will be
better prepared to cast an informed vote in the Democratic and Republican
primary elections on March 6.
There are two commissioner seats to be filled this year. Incumbents
Shane Wilkin and Tom Horst are candidates again, along with Steve Cowdrey,
Brenda Losey, Randy Mustard and Josh Patton. The winners in their respective
primary elections will then face the voters again in the November general
election.
SOACDF offers
educational grant
The Southern Ohio Agricultural and Community Development Foundation will
once again offer the Educational Excellence Competitive Grant for school
year 2012-13. The Educational Excellence grant is a one-time award of up to
$7,500 toward the cost of tuition, on-campus housing, lab fees and books
that can be billed through the college or university. Producers who reside
in the 22 counties the foundation serves with a current Farm Service Number
on record with the Farm Service Agency as of July 1, 2011 and their
financial dependents or tobacco program eligible producers and their
financial dependents are eligible to apply.
Applicants must be enrolled full-time as a sophomore, junior or senior
in the 2012-13 school year at an accredited institution and be seeking a
bachelor’s degree. Students must also maintain 2.8 or higher GPA to be
eligible.
Applications and guidelines for the Educational Excellence Competitive
Grant are now available at the SOACDF office or online at www.soacdf.net.
The application period ends Jan. 31, 2012. Applications will not be

Heartland needs judges for Chili Challenge
Heartland of Hillsboro is recruiting judges for their eighth annual
Chili Challenge, set for Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 2 p.m.
There are two categories, mild and hot.
A winner and second runner-up will be picked in each category.
The first-place winning recipes will be prepared for all to sample at a
Chili Supper and Silent Auction to be held at the Ponderosa Banquet Center
March 8.
All proceeds will benefit the Highland County Society for Children and

New Directions Telethon
Jan. 24 in Greenfield
The 19th annual New Directions Youth Ministry Telethon is scheduled for
Tuesday, Jan. 24 from 7-9 p.m. on Channel 3 on Time Warner Cable in
Greenfield. There will also be live updates of the telethon broadcasting on
WVNU, 97.5 FM, for those who do not get cable Channel 3. The public is
invited to visit the GCTV-3 studio and the McClain High School Cafetorium,
where you can join the New Directions group for food, fellowship and prayer
and/or make a contribution in person. Many people prefer to make their
tax-deductible donations prior to the end of the year. If you would like to

The Cowan Lake Association of Sportsmen (CLASS) will host a ham and

SATH’s annual Sweetheart Charity Ball Feb. 11
SATH will be holding its annual Valentine’s Sweetheart Charity Ball on
Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Roberts Centre in Wilmington. The evening will
begin with appetizers at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. and dancing from 8-11 p.m.
The attire for the evening is semi-formal/formal.

hosts candidates night Jan. 31
The Highland County Democratic Party will host a "meet the candidates" night
on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 6:30 p.m. in the Highland County Administration
Building basement meeting room. Candidates appearing will include Randy
Mustard and Josh Patton, both running in a contested primary for county
commissioner. Brenda Losey, running unopposed in the primary for the other
county commissioner spot, will also be present, along with treasurer
candidate Gary Heaton, independent candidate Larry Burns for recorder and
91st State Representative candidate Peter Pence.
The main speaker for the evening will be David Krikorian, Democratic
candidate for the 2nd Congressional District.
"He very much wants to meet the people of Highland County and answer any
questions they might have," Dinah Phillips, Highland County Democratic Party
Chairperson, said.
There will be a carry-in dinner hosted by the party, with officers
furnishing meat, drinks and table service. Everyone should bring a covered
dish and an auction item. Frank Grover will be present to conduct a lively

Boaters safety course
March 31 at Lake Waynoka
The Waynoka WaterSports Club will be sponsoring an Ohio Boating
Education Course at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 31 at the Lake Waynoka Lodge.
Cost of this course is $5 payable to ODNR Watercraft. This course will
consist of 8 hours of instruction in a certified class followed by an exam.
This year everybody younger than 30 years of age needs to pass a test
certified by the state before they can drive any type of boat powered by
more than 10 hp. You can pre-register for the class by calling ODNR

SATH hosts 3rd annual
chili cook-off Jan. 28
S.A.T.H. is having its third annual “Souper Bowl” Chili Cook-Off and
Cake Walk Saturday, Jan. 28 from 5-8 p.m. at the Hillsboro Elementary School
Cafeteria. All are welcome to come and taste the chili and judge the
winners. Bring your change and vote for your favorites, 25 cents per vote.
There will be chili tasting, face painting, games, cake walk, raffles and
food to buy. All proceeds go to support S.A.T.H. and KAMP DOVETAIL. Prizes

available at the Highland County Senior Center every Monday and Tuesday

Thursday bingo
The Hillsboro Eagles host bingo on Thursday nights. Doors open at 5:30
