Elections Board meets Dec. 5
The Highland County Board of Elections will be holding an automatic
recount on Monday, Dec. 5 at 8 a.m. in the Board of Elections office. The
recount will involve the Fairfield Fiscal Officer race and the Greenfield
Natural Gas Aggregation issue. The public is welcome to attend.
Aglow International
meets Dec. 5
The Hillsboro Chapter of Aglow International will hold their
November/December joint meeting Monday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the First
Baptist Church at 127 South West Street in Hillsboro (meeting location for
this month only). The event will include a "mixed blessing potluck dinner,"
and attendees are asked to bring their favorite dish. There will also be an
ornament exchange, and members are asked to bring gloves for schoolchildren.
A songfest will be hosted by Bill and Donna Meyers with special music by The
Jesus Pleasers.
Greg Wilkin Memorial
Tournament Dec. 26
The Greg Wilkin Memorial Scholarship Alumni Basketball Tournament will
take place on Monday, Dec. 26 and Tuesday, Dec. 27 at Lynchburg-Clay High
School Gymnasium. All proceeds benefit the Greg Wilkin Memorial Scholarship

Hillsboro mayor
plans veterans tribute
Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink is organizing a tribute for veterans of the
U.S. Armed Forces so that residents of Hillsboro can have a chance to thank
them for their services to the nation and community.
“December 7, 2011 marks the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor,” Zink
said. “We will be holding a veterans recognition day at Hillsboro High
School to honor all veterans of Hillsboro and Highland County. The program
will start at 7 p.m.”
Edgewood Manor
offers Medicare help
Edgewood Manor of Greenfield will offer assistance with Medicare Part D
prescription plans every Wednesday from 1-4 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to
noon during the enrollment period through Dec. 7. Bring a copy of your
Medicare card, a copy of all your medications or a medication list from the

Christmas at the Cabin
Janny Brizius has announced seasonal hours for Christmas at the Cabin,
located on Cave Road east of Hillsboro. The cabin, which is stuffed with
hand-crafted wares from numerous artisans – both local and across the
country – features clothing, jewelry, household wares, special holiday
decorations and more. The cabin will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, and from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays through Dec. 18. Call (937)

Recovery program meets on Tuesdays
The Celebrate Victory Recovery Program meets every Tuesday night at 7
p.m. at ReaLife Church, located at 230 West South Street, Hillsboro.
Alzheimer’s Support Group meetings
The Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati will sponsor a
Highland County Alzheimer’s/Dementia Family Caregiver Support Group on the
third Monday of each month from 5-6:30 p.m. at Highland District Hospital.

The Colony Theatre in Hillsboro will kick off its Christian music series

Christmas party in Belfast
The Knights of Pythias Lodge 696 of 2158 state Route 73, Belfast will
host a Christmas party on Saturday, Dec. 17 beginning at 5:45 p.m. Dinner
will begin at 6:15 p.m. (bring a covered dish). Santa will arrive at 7:30
p.m. There will be drawings, door prizes, games, food and prizes. Gifts are

There will not be an Open Door meal at the Greenfield United Methodist
Church in November or December. The next meal will be on Jan. 28.

Senior Center Dec. 17
Breakfast with Santa will be held Dec. 17 from 10 a.m. - noon at the
Highland County Senior Center. Pancakes, sausage, eggs, hash browns,
biscuits and gravy and beverages will be served for $3 per person. The
public is invited to call the center at 393-4745 to make a reservation. All
children are invited to meet Santa and his elves.
Christmas dinner

SOACDF offers $7,500 Educational
Excellence Competitive grant
The Southern Ohio Agricultural and Community Development Foundation will
once again offer the Educational Excellence Competitive Grant for school
year 2012-13. The Educational Excellence grant is a one-time award of up to
$7,500 toward the cost of tuition, on campus housing, lab fees and books
that can be billed through the college or university. Producers who reside
in the 22 counties the foundation serves with a current Farm Service Number
on record with the Farm Service Agency as of July 1, 2011 and their
financial dependents or tobacco program eligible producers and their
financial dependents are eligible to apply.
Applicants must be enrolled fulltime as a sophomore, junior or senior in
the 2012-13 school year at an accredited institution and be seeking a
bachelor's degree. Students must also maintain 2.8 or higher GPA to be
eligible. Applications and guidelines for the Educational Excellence
Competitive Grant are now available at the SOACDF office or online at
www.soacdf.net.
The application period is Jan. 1, 2012 to Jan. 31, 2012. Applications
will not be accepted either before of after this period. If you have

The Southern Ohio Agricultural and Community Development Foundation
serves 22 counties in southern Ohio by providing educational assistance,
agricultural and economic development grants. The foundation has awarded
more than $80 million in grants since the programs began in 2001.
Leesburg Heritage Club
hosts Dec. 11 dinner
The Leesburg Heritage Club will host a chicken and noodle dinner Dec. 11
from 4-6 p.m. at the Leesburg Fire House before the luminary services. A
freewill donation will be accepted. The menu will include chicken and
noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, dinner rolls, desserts, coffee,
water, iced tea and lemonade. Proceeds will benefit local projects.

The Highland County Democratic Women and the Highland County Democratic
Central and Executive Committee will hold their annual joint carry-in
Christmas dinner and auction on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Highland
County Administration Building. Meat, drinks and table service will be
provided. An auction will follow with Frank Grover as auctioneer. The public
is cordially invited to join the group for a lively evening of fun and food.

Sugartree Ministries hosts
Christmas celebration
Alan Willoughby, director of Sugartree Ministries, and James Brown,
pastor of New Life Church, will host a Christmas celebration with Blaine
Bowman and his good-time band on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. at Sugartree
Ministries, 180 East Main St., Wilmington. The Singing Bowman Family from
Lebanon will perform. Admission is free; however, all who attend are asked
to bring any non-perishable items to the celebration and place them in the
cart provided. Monetary donations will also be accepted. Sugartree
Ministries feeds more than 1,200 hot meals per week, and donations are
greatly appreciated. Refreshments will be served.
Anita Foley to speak
at Methodist Church Dec.11
Hillsboro resident Anita Foley will share pictures and stories of her
recent mission trip to Colombia during a luncheon at the Hillsboro First
United Methodist Church, 133 East Walnut St., on Dec. 11 from noon - 1 p.m.
Foley is a volunteer for Compassion International, a nonprofit,
Christian child development organization that serves children and their
families in 26 developing countries. Founded in 1952, the organization
currently serves over 1 million children and consistently receives the
highest possible ranking from Charity Navigator, an American watchdog
organization that rates charities. Foley and other volunteers traveled to
Colombia to work with the child centers Compassion International has in and
around Bogotá, the country's capital. The group went on home visits with
some of the sponsored children, and Foley was able to meet the child her
family sponsors. Our Daily Bread will provide pulled pork sandwiches,
coleslaw and drinks for the Dec. 11 event. All are welcome to attend and are
encouraged to bring a covered dish or dessert to share.
HUBA holds
membership drive
The Hillsboro Uptown Business Association is currently holding a membership
drive to encourage new and renewed support by memberships for the
organization to continue to promote uptown Hillsboro. Membership
contributions help HUBA to do the following: Boofest, the Christmas parade,
the First Friday art walk, First Friday car show, snowflake pageant and
First Friday Christmas. This year, membership is open to individuals,
families, businesses and organizations outside the uptown business district
who wish to join the effort to improve the quality of uptown Hillsboro and
