Hillsboro mayor plans
veterans tribute
Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink is organizing a tribute for veterans of the
U.S. Armed forces so that residents of Hillsboro can have a chance to thank
them for their services to the nation, and community.
“December 7, 2011 marks the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor,” Zink
said. “We will be holding a veterans recognition day at Hillsboro High
School to honor all veterans of Hillsboro and Highland County. The program
will start at 7 p.m.”
Arrangements on the program have not been completed, he said, but should
be finalized by the November council meeting. The mayor said that he is
working with Hillsboro City Schools Superintendent Rick Earley, and the
director of the high school band.
“We’re looking forward to being able to honor all the veterans of
Highland County,” Zink said.

Boofest 2011 set for Oct. 27
Buckeye Country 105.5 FM and 1590 AM will host Boofest 2011, presented
in part by the Hillsboro Uptown Business Association. This year’s event will
be Thursday, Oct. 27 from 5-7 p.m. on the Courthouse Square in uptown
Hillsboro. There will be a “pet parade” and costume judging contests for the
kids. Children can start their trick-or-treating early with the businesses
in town starting at 5 p.m. There will be a contest of the businesses to see
who decorates the best leading up to and during the event. There will be
food vendors this year for the first time from select non-profit groups to

AAUW, Altrusa to hold
annual book sale
The Hillsboro area branch of the American Association of University
Women and Altrusa are preparing for the annual book sale. Barrels for the
collection of gently used books have been placed in the Leesburg,
Greenfield, Lynchburg and Hillsboro libraries; Save-A-Lot market in
Greenfield; and Kroger and Community Markets in Hillsboro. No magazines,
encyclopedias, texts or condensed books, please. The sale will be held at
the Highland County Administration Building on Thursday, Nov. 3 from noon-6
p.m.; Friday, Nov. 4 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 5 from 10
a.m.-1 p.m. Funds raised will provide scholarships and support literary
projects.
Edgewood Manor
offers Medicare help
Edgewood Manor of Greenfield will offer assistance with Medicare Part D
prescription plans every Wednesday from 1-4 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to
noon during the enrollment period of Oct. 15-Dec. 7. Bring a copy of your
Medicare card, a copy of all your medications or a medication list from the

Democratic Party
fall dinner Oct. 25
The Highland County Democratic Party will hold its fall dinner on Tuesday,
Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the County Administration Building Basement Meeting
Room with a carry-in dinner. The Party will provide meat, drinks and table
service. The speaker for the evening will be State Representative Michael
Stinziano. Rep. Stinziano, a graduate of The Ohio State University Moritz
College of Law, previously was a legal extern for the Supreme Court of Ohio;
was previously general counsel for Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner;
and in 2008 was the director of the Franklin County Board of Elections. He
will speak regarding the issues on the ballot this November, especially
Issue 2 (Senate Bill 5). Any candidate for city, school board or township
office is welcome to come and be acknowledged. As usual, there will be a
lively auction conducted by Frank Grover, so bring an auction item.
Adoption seminar
at Danville church
The Danville Church of Christ is hosting a seminar on international
adoption on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. The seminar is sponsored by America
World Adoption Agency and will provide information regarding the adoption
process from different countries around the world. Two families will share
their adoption experiences from China. The seminar is free. You may register

Haunted Hills at
Magic Waters now open
The Haunted Hills at Magic Waters is open each Friday, Saturday and
Sunday evening through Oct. 30. The gates open at 7 p.m. each night. The
trails open at dark. While waiting, there is magic and ghost stories around
the campfire by Boonie the Magician. On Friday and Saturday evenings, it
will remain open until 11 p.m. On Sunday evenings, it closes at 10 p.m.
Haunted Hills is at Magic Waters Theatre, on Cave Road, four miles west
of Bainbridge, and 1/2 way between Hillsboro and Chillicothe off of U.S. 50.

Christmas at the Cabin
Janny Brizius has announced seasonal hours for Christmas at the Cabin,
located on Cave Road east of Hillsboro.
The cabin, which is stuffed with hand-crafted wares from numerous artisans
– both local and across the country – features clothing, jewelry, household
wares, dolls and toys, special holiday decorations and more.
The cabin will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and

Belfast church hosts
Oct. 21 dinner
The Belfast United Methodist Church will serve a chicken noodle dinner
Friday, Oct. 21 from 4:30-7 p.m. A complete menu of noodles, mashed
potatoes, green beans, slow, rolls, dessert and beverage will be available
for a freewill donation. All proceeds will go to the refurbishing of the
stained glass windows. The church is located on state Route 73 just 10 miles
south of Hillsboro.
Open Door free meal Oct. 29
The Open Door free meal will be held at the Greenfield First United
Methodist Church on Saturday, Oct. 29. Serving will be from 4-5:30 p.m. The
menu will be chili, PBJ sandwiches, crackers, apple sauce. Everyone welcome!
Altrusa literacy
program Oct. 22
Altrusa International of Highland County will host a literacy event on Oct.
22. The event will be held on the Highland County Courthouse Lawn in
Hillsboro from 10-11 a.m. and on the Greenfield Courthouse lawn from noon
until 1 p.m. A Mother Goose storyteller will be present, and Altrusa members
will read to children. There will also be a mural for children to draw
pictures or write a message to soldiers overseas. Each child in attendance
will receive a book. Refreshments will be served.
Fund-raising dinner Nov. 19 at
Southern Highland Joint
Fire District in Mowrystown
The Southern Highland Joint Fire District located in Mowrystown will be
having its annual spaghetti dinner on Nov. 19 frpm 4-8 p.m., for donations
only. There will be a raffle and anyone wanting to donate a item for the
raffle can call the fire department 937-442-1170. Funds raised will go to
help out with the special things the volunteer firemen and EMTs do
throughout the year. (Blankets or coats for a family that has been burned
out of their home; a present for a child for Christmas; a stuffed animal for
a child; fire safety supplies; cases of water; or educational supplies). The
dinner will be at the Mowrystown Firehouse 50 Maple St., Mowrystown.
Countywide curfew
in effect Oct. 1-31
A countywide curfew is in effect for the month of October for all
persons under the age of 18. The curfew will run through Oct. 31 and require
all persons under the age of 18 to be off the streets and in their homes by
10 p.m., Monday through Thursday and midnight Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The curfew does not apply where children are accompanied by parents,
legal guardians or custodians. Exception is also made for children attending
church, school or employment activities.
Enforcement will be handled by all law enforcement agencies, including
the sheriff’s department, city or village police and juvenile probation
officers. After consultation with law enforcement, it is requested that each
jurisdiction set beggars night on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 6-8 p.m.

Sugar Grove United Methodist Church will host their annual Soup
Supper/Craft Auction Nov. 5 at the church, located at 4679 state Route 41 SE
in Washington C.H. The dinner will be served from 4:30-6:30 p.m., and the
auction will begin at 7 p.m.
Recovery program
meets on Tuesdays
The Celebrate Victory Recovery Program meets every Tuesday night at 7
p.m. at ReaLife Church, located at 7454 Fenner Lane in Hillsboro.
Alzheimer’s Support

The Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati will sponsor a
Highland County Alzheimer’s/Dementia Family Caregiver Support Group on the
third Monday of each month from 5-6:30 p.m. at Highland District Hospital.

Veterans Memorial
The Highland County Commissioners and the VFW are placing a Veterans
Memorial on the Highland County Courthouse lawn. In order to raise the
money, they will put any veteran’s name on a brick for $50. All Highland
County veterans are eligible. The committee will also accept donations. Any
veteran who wants to buy a brick may contact the VFW at 393-0211 or call

Ohio Valley offers
vacation raffle
Hospice of Hope Ohio Valley has several fundraisers throughout the year
which help provide quality hospice care. They will be raffling a
seven-day/six-night vacation to Ellington Plantation in Myrtle Beach for the
week of Nov. 20-27. Tickets are $10 each and only 500 will be sold. The
winning raffle ticket will be awarded on Oct. 28. For information, call
