Chapel in the Woods at Rocky Fork Lake marks 50th year

Sunday, May 9 marks the opening of the Chapel in the Woods at Rocky Fork Lake, a summer worship ministry of Hillsboro First United Methodist Church. Services traditionally begin on Mother’s Day and continue through Labor Day weekend. The nondenominational services begin at 8 a.m., weather permitting.

The Chapel in the Woods first opened in May 1960 under the direction of the Rev. Carl Ling, senior pastor at First Methodist Church. The outdoor worship setting is located in a large wood adjacent to Rocky Fork State Park camp ground, and is made possible by friends and members of Hillsboro First United Methodist Church.

Original construction of the Chapel was by the William Faul Construction Company with approximately forty volunteers from the Methodist church. The 14-acre site was donated by Clarence Hiestand, and in 1988 purchased by the church from the Hiestand heirs.

The Chapel access is located on North Shore Drive where a portal structure marks the trail entrance, or through the campground.  The community is invited to attend worship services in a unique outdoor environment. For more information on the Chapel, contact Hillsboro First United Methodist Church at 393-2981.
