Brad Barber, Highland County Board of Realtors Association Executive, was the guest speaker at the Aug. 26 Realtors board meeting at the Ponderosa Banquet Center in Hillsboro.
After Realtors and their affiliates enjoyed a lunch sponsored by NB&T, Barber discussed the Realtors Code of Ethics. The Code of Ethics is a "living document" Barber said, "because it must change to reflect current conditions."
The Code of Ethics dates back to 1913, when the first code was adopted by the National Association of Real Estate Exchanges. Barber explained that Realtors are a self-governing body. He stressed the need for accountability and a knowledge of the Code of Ethics.
During Barber's speech, Highland County Board of Realtors Vice President Josh Patton distributed copies of the 2010 Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
Barber then explained the complaint and investigation process. "Complaints may come from Realtors, brokers or the public," he said. "The first thing I do is talk to the people involved. I can tell our board if there is a complaint, but I can't discuss it. Everyone gets due process. We have a three-person grievance committee and we hear all complaints on any Highland County Realtor, even if it is from another county."
Barber said the grievance committee can forward a complaint, if it has merit, to a hearing committee or it can dismiss the complaint if there's no merit to it. Barber also outlined the potential punishments for a legitimate complaint.
"I encourage all of you to read your Code of Ethics," Barber said.
