Changing time, thanking friends

This has been one of those weeks. It’s been a week in which I lost an hour, or 10, instead of picking up an extra one as Daylight Saving Time came to its seasonal conclusion.
In fact, it was Monday before I even realized most people this side of Indiana had turned back their respective clocks. (Sometimes old, outdated online news can be helpful after all.)
The week began, Lord forgive me, with a long Sunday at the Main Street office. At some point, I decided to take a break from the computer and sweep the sidewalk in front of your community newspaper office.
But when I walked outside, I noticed Larry Cole carrying a wreath. That’s not something one is accustomed to seeing every day in uptown Hillsboro.
Larry was heading west. Immediately, I thought of Horace Greeley – the 19th century New York newspaperman who is often credited with saying “Go west, young man.”
Larry didn’t go west all that far, though. He stopped at an uptown light pole and placed a wreath beside it. Then, I saw John Dodds and Dave Grover with wreaths of their own.
“All right,” I said to myself, something’s going on.
What was going on was the Hillsboro Lions Club providing yet another one of their many public services.
As we reported online on Nov. 1, All Saints Day, these local saints were working hard to decorate the uptown area for the holiday season.
Our thanks goes to the aforementioned Lions, as well as Dave Lowell, Dave Pinney and TimeWarner Cable. Thank you, Lions.
Your efforts, year in and year out, help to put us in the holiday spirit. (And thanks, too, for all you do all year long.)
• Yes, The Highland County Press endorsed – with some reservations – Ohio Issues 1, 2 and 3. Yes, voters approved the three statewide issues. Thanks for noticing.
• It’s been said before by people much smarter than your humble newspaper publisher, but I cannot help but thank the Highland County independent business community for your support.
You have been tremendously supportive in our first two months under new management – thanks. (And a special thanks to members of the Highland County Board of Realtors, and the local real estate and auctioneering professionals.)
Last week, as we were making our sales calls, one area business owner most politely declined to advertise, then she quickly added, “Please, come see me in the spring.” We will.
And we will not make any pressure sales calls. It’s not our nature, nor our policy. We will promote our print and online editions for what they are worth. Nothing more, nothing less.
No gimmicks and no false promises.
The choice is yours and we thank you for giving us the opportunity to earn your confidence.
• On the subject of thanks, a tremendous thanks goes out to Jim Matticks for his HCP online video news segments. Jim’s latest presentation was from the annual Rotary Bowl football game between Hillsboro and McClain.
If you haven’t viewed the video, please go to www.highlandcountypress.com and take a look.
Jim, whose wife, Angie, is the general manager/marketing director/online guru and CEO of the HCP, captured many of the game’s key moments for digital reproduction. (ESPN called this week, but don’t tell Jim.)
• Lastly, for the record, I did not in any way solicit today’s letter from the Hon. Judge David McKenna. And if you know the judge, you already know that he is not one to yield to any outside influences.
Judge McKenna’s correspondence is one of his own volition.
I appreciate the fact that he has taken time from his hectic schedule in order to shed light on the legal interpretations related to an earlier column of mine.
It is rare for a public official to enter the fray of his own accord, especially when the prudent political course would be to avoid it. Thank you, Judge.
