Senator Johnson praises override of property tax reform veto
Sen. Terry Johnson
COLUMBUS – State Senator Terry Johnson (R-McDermott) joined his Senate colleagues in overturning one of Governor DeWine's vetoes on property tax reform.
"I voted to overturn the governor's veto," said Senator Johnson. "This override is the first step toward returning property taxes to what they were meant to be. It is time to get this under control – to return to the taxation system to sanity.”
Following the passage of the Operating Budget, House Bill 96, Governor DeWine vetoed 67 sections. Among sections vetoed was the restriction of subdivisions to pursue certain types of levies including but not limited to replacement and substitute emergency levies.
"Every day, I hear from my constituents about rampant property tax increases," added Senator Johnson. "By enacting these commonsense reforms and eliminating confusing and complicated levies, we are giving the people of Ohio a true voice on this issue. I look forward to the overturn of more vetoes, ensuring that no Ohio veteran or family has to worry about unaffordable property taxes. And of course, there is much more work to do on this matter."
Levies currently in place, or on the November 2025 ballot, will not be affected by this restriction.
