William Pierce Shaffer, 85, of Hillsboro, died Friday, October 23, 2009 at the Chillicothe Veterans Administration Hospital.
He was born August 23, 1924 in Bookwalter, Ohio, the son of the late Samuel and Hazel Perkins Shaffer.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II. Mr. Shaffer has served more than 50 years in the ministry serving several local churches. He was an evangelist in his early years and was recently Sr. Pastor to his son Billy in the Charity Mission Church in Marshall.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia Evelyn (Flora) Shaffer, who he married December 8, 1945 in Lynchburg; four daughters, Sandy Barnett and her husband Walter of Winterhaven, Florida, Patty Huston of Martinsville, Sharon Potter of Marshall, and Lisa Hibbs of Hillsboro; four sons, William Samuel “Billy” Shaffer Jr., and his wife Cindy of Hillsboro, Keith Shaffer of Marshall, Kelvin Shaffer and his wife Pam of Wilmington, and Tony Shaffer and his wife Rhonda of Berrysville; three sisters, Elizabeth “Libby” Tissandier of Blanchester, Jane Runyon of Wilmington, and Rebecca “Becky” Woods of Blanchester; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Jean Shaffer Newland; two sisters, Mabel McGraph, and Nell Welch; and one brother, Robert Shaffer.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at the Turner & Son Funeral Home, Hillsboro. Mr. Shaffer’s son Billy will officiate. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family in the Clinton Memory Gardens, Wilmington. Visitation will be held Tuesday from noon until the time of service at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Charity Mission, P.O. Box 283, Hillsboro, Ohio 45133.
