Mildred McGowan, 87, of Hillsboro died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010.
She resided for the last 10 years with her daughter, Rose Mary Smith, who was also her caregiver.
Mrs. McGowan was a beautiful woman both inside and out and her presence and warm smile made life easier for everyone around her.
She was born, March 9, 1923 to Charles and Rosa Patrick, in Royalton, Ky.
She was a member of the Northview Baptist Church in Hillsboro.
Mrs. McGowan is survived by her sister, Stella (Milt) Jordan; her children, Rose Mary (John preceded in death) Smith, Donna Jean Hodge, Charles Edward (Berniece) McGowan; her grandchildren, Sheila (Robert) Sams, John “Jay” Smith (Sandy), Donnie Smith, Ronnie (Anna) Smith, Randy (Teresa) Smith, Jeff
McGowan, Jason (Melanie) McGowan, Andy (Melissa) Hodge, Tony (Nikka) Hodge; her great-grandchildren, Mandy (Doug) Rhodes, & Rob Jr. “Bub” Sams; Mallory
and Katie Smith; Jackie, Joey, and Jesse Smith; Julie, Ronnie Jr., and Justin Smith; Britany Johnson, Miranda, & Michaela Smith, Michael Hodge, Riley,
Jacob, Meghan, Alleesha, Allaynah McGowan; her great-great-grandchildren, Renaylyn Marie Rhodes, and Austin Garrett Smith. She is further survived by other relatives, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, Don McGowan, on May 16, 1998. They had shared 58 years of marriage together. She also was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Rosa Patrick; siblings, Mollie Cirino, Nellie Patrick, Glenn Patrick, Elmer Patrick and Roy Patrick; and a son-in-Law, John E. Smith.
In her earlier years, Mildred and her husband, Don, ran a successful peach orchard on Carmel Road, in Highland County. She enjoyed her grape arbor, patio tomatoes, and a variety of fruit trees at her former residence. In her later years, she enjoyed camping with her family, and she really loved spending time with her Jack Russell puppies. She also enjoyed her many Mennonite friends who came to sing and visit with her. She will be truly missed by all those who loved her and by everyone who ever met her and experienced her genuinely warm smile.
Services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Northview Baptist Church, 1139 Northview Drive, Hillsboro. Brother Jeff Griffin and Brother Kenny Cousar will be officiating. There will be no visitation and no graveside services.
Thompson Funeral Home will be serving the family.
