LeRoy Edward Smith, 81, of Hillsboro, died Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 at Highland District Hospital.
He was born Jan. 12, 1929 in Wellsburg, W.Va., the son of the late Edward and Viola Rhodes Smith.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving for more than 20 years and during the Korean War.
He retired from the service as a military policeman at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
He believed in spreading the word of the Jehovah Witness faith, talking with many about his faith in Jehovah God.
He is survived by his daughter Viola Nelson of Hillsboro; son Edward (Amy) Rickman of Hillsboro; six grandchildren, Melissa Nelson, Ciara Nelson, Travis Nelson, Elliot Nelson, DaShawn Rickman, and Mia Rickman; two great- grandchildren, Morgan Garman, and Leah Ramos Nelson; three sisters, Queenester Hawkins of Albion, Michigan, Ethelleane Booth of Columbus, and Naomi Reeves of Columbus; and one brother Nathaniel Smith of Hillsboro.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Chiyoko Sakamoto Smith in 1969; and two brothers John and Charles Smith.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27 at the Turner & Son Funeral Home, Hillsboro. Burial will follow in the Resthaven Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
